Their certified refurbs come with a 12 month warranty. I've never seen a mention of them replacing a battery.

If you've got the dough get the Oasis; the bigger screen is very nice. Even better is to dodge the Amazon lock-in (which isn't so bad) and get a Kobo Forma which has a much better user interface.

I have a Paperwhite 3 and a Paperwhite 4. These are also called Paperwhite 7 and Paperwhite 10 by Amazon but everybody else calls them the 3rd and 4th generation Paperwhite, which they really are. I have 20/20 vision and I can't see any real difference in the screens. Or, more realistically, I can see as much difference in the individual units as in the models. I have 2 Paperwhite 3's and 3 Paperwhite 4's. The Paperwhite 4 has a sunken screen with raised bezels making it a bit easier to hold without accidentally turning pages. The Paperwhite 4 has a flush screen and is waterproof. Frankly I don't see a lot of difference in reading with them. They're more similar than they're different. I haven't seen an Oasis or a basic Kindle so I can't really comment on those. Personally I think the Paperwhite is the one that makes the most sense as a compromise between price and practicality for someone like me who reads novels almost exclusively. Barry |

Note: when JSWolf says "EOL" what he means is "it didn't get a couple of firmware updates (with no particularly great effect) because of what Amazon has now said is a bug in the update machinery which will be fixed". i.e., what everyone else would call "not EOLed". Getting the PW3 is fine, if you want to. |

"Lot" is a relative term. In my case I've bought about 25-30 Kindles from eBay, Craigslist, pawn shops and Shop Goodwill. Of those 25-30, one I bought from a pawn shop was blacklisted – all others could be registered.

I missed this news. I sure hope the fix comes soon. The drip, drip, drip EOL spiel is getting old. Personally my PW3 is locked to 10.7 because it works better with Send-To-Kindle documents when using the Constantia font. I don't feel like I'm missing anything. | |

I read that about the PW3 getting new firmware also but it was on GoodEreader so there's no telling how reliable it is. Here's a link to the article: https://goodereader.com/blog/kindle/...t-new-firmware Barry |

My PW 3 is still stuck on 5.11.1.1 and is on WiFi all the time. No over the air update yet.

But if you want to save money, the Kobo Libra H2O is the same size screen and similar form factor but it costs less.

But you do take a risk buying a Kindle on eBay more then any place else.

It looks like the PW4 is currently on sale (in the US) for $105.
