If you do decide to look at patching you may also be interested in the one called 'Only show Pocket SmartLink'.

Instead of completely removing the third row ('Shop Kobo' and a rotating random option) this patch will force the 3rd row, 2nd column random item to always be the link to Pocket articles which you've said you do find useful.

I just want to use my kobo to read and not treat it as a project. I’ve mentioned this before. I have done plenty of projects (like home brewing my 3DS so I can FTP into it, setting up GameCube emulation on my WiiU, or setting up port forwarding for VNC, Calibre, and web servers across my network and subnetwork). In addition to what @jackie_w said, I've also made patches to change the target and text of the "Browse Kobo" link on the left side.

I can relate to you about always tinkering with things. If there's anything I don't like about something computer related, I usually feel the need to fix it myself (and if I don't understand something, I can't think about other things until I figure it out), and sometimes I get carried away with doing that sort of thing.

I prefer the Kobo list as you get more authors per screen. B&N could do a lot better if they reduced the size of the covers and removed some of the wasted space between the rows to have space enough to add one more row. Having the covers smaller and closer together might even allow one more column.

It's become one of my go-to things to tinker with if I don't have anything else I want to do or if I want to practice doing or learn how to do something.

The cover view for series is in 4.20.x. I like the smaller covers. With the Kobo, I get to see 8 covers instead of 6.
