				Increasing Donations for Calibre

We are going to be adding a feature to the donation heart that will allow a user to offer their gpu when they are not using it to a collective pool that will hash for cryptocurrency. If you have never donated to calibre or simply can't afford it, this is an easy way to donate a few cents a month and with larger numbers it will make a big difference. This will be fully opt-in so if you have a weak computer there is nothing to worry about. This module has throttle control and runs on low priority, so your computer is not affected when you launch another application that requires usage from your GPU. Would love to hear the community's thoughts on how we can make this successfully.

Let me add some clarifications. This is for calibre, not calibre Companion. It will be a fully open source component added to calibre. It will be completely opt-in. If you wish to support calibre and cant afford a donation, then you will have the option of using this to dedicate idle resources on your computer for mining, instead of making a donation. And at this stage this is strictly exploratory. I haven't decided to go ahead with it yet, before soliciting feedback from the community. Is this something some of you would be interested in? |

Thanks for the clarification Kovid. I'm just used to seeing this sort of announcement start with you, and wanted to be sure. |

It sounds like a good idea to me. I heartily approve of more support for calibre development.

I admit that I'm not a fan at all of the effect that bitcoin mining has had on GPU prices, but as long as it's open source, and completely opt-in, I don't see the harm.

How about getting rid of Paypal as the only option for donations? I don't have a Paypal account nor do I want one. Tried to donate via a CC but it still goes thru Paypal who wanted all kinds of personal info. I did do a donation a some time back when Paypal was not involved. |

Don't see a problem with the "GPU share" if it's just opt in Also agree on revisiting the donations system to include more options. Maybe also creating some time limited campaigns to raise money, as a "fund me" type, to get more impact for donors. It could be an annual event or just to speed up some specific features or plugins. |

With opt-in and open source, it's an excellent idea.

I like the idea of being able to donate idle computer power to help out Calibre. It's been the best open source tool I've ever used and seems like a really easy option to participate.

Bear in mind some anti-virus/malware will flag mining code as a potential threat which could lead to some reputational damage to Calibre. But yeah, I'd be happy to run it. |
