The sharpness of the eink 800x600 screens didn't bother me as much as the washed out look.

I should have been more specific. Older eink screens looked washed out to me. I think I would be fine with a modern (Carta, front lit) lower resolution reader, although I would by a 300ppi version.

If I had to, I could go back to my Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight. I'm not saying I would prefer it to a nice 300 ppi Carta screen. I'm just saying I could.

My wife still uses a Kindle 3 (keyboard), and every time I put a book on it I'm impressed by how well it still stands up to modern readers. The screen is extremely crisp, great contrast, and in some ways looks better than modern screens with all of the touch and light layers above the text. I don't find the lower resolution to be a problem at all, especially given the heavier font that it uses. That said, I have to say that the spillover from her lighted case is a bit annoying when my screen is a nice orange shade and lit just enough to read the text. |

I like mine. It kind of gets lost in the crowd, but it got most of my use for two or three years. It's also the one I use for DeDRM-ing my Kindle books – and it's the only where I ever set up collections. I've got a lighted OEM case for it, which might partly be why its battery is about shot. But I plan on replacing the battery. This and my original Nook Simple Touch are two readers I plan on holding on to (even though the Simple Touch now suffers from "rubber rot" and I can't really take it out of its case).

Do you actually mean to say that you have a SINGLE older ereader that appears washed out? Because in general what you're saying is obviously wrong. The only time I've heard someone make that complaint about the older readers is when there was a bad initial batch of the K4NT silver and some of them had poor contrast. My experience (and I think most people too) is that the layers on the modern Kindles reduces the contrast (not by a lot just a little) so that the older ones (no touch or infrared touch) generally outperform them excepting the Voyage.

And unless you reduced the resolution of the hi-res graphics (aka cover, title page, maps, etc), your old nook would slow down, freeze, or reboot. They don't have the processor speed and/or enough working ram.
