Well that one doesn't work since Amazon does not have an 8" eInk ereader in their current lineup.

Please note that Richwood said nothing about popularity, just features and prices.

BTW, using the pricing from Amazon.ca and Kobo's Canadian site:

Code:
6" devices
Paperwhite	$139.99
Clara HD	$139.99

7" devices
Oasis 8GB	$329.99
Libra H2O	$199.99

8" devices
Forma 8GB	$299.99
So price wise, a tie on the 6" end, a definite advantage on the 7" devices and no contest for the 8" device.
Interesting. In the US, the Oasis is only $269 without offers. It's $249 with offers. The only way to get close to the $329 price is to get the 32 GB version with free cellular connectivity and no offers for $349.

While this is still more expensive than the Libra, it's not as much of a disparity.

A $50 difference against a $200 item is indeed not as much of a disparity, but at a 25% premium, or more than 33% at $269, I'd say that is a significant disparity. Not bank-breaking, but definitely significant

Does it matter, really? From reading the entire thread, it is clear the consumer is held hostage by whatever national and economic constraints 'the system' places on them. And then the availability of books themselves seems constrained by a byzantine network of
publishing rights, anti-competition laws, and outright government meddling.

Reading what you want to read has always been a lot of work. It seems that as economics and literacy were eliminated as barriers, artificial barriers were put up to replace them.

Shari, you might want to consider that the prices I posted were in Canadian dollars. So your $269.99 price on the Oasis works out to $378.55 Cdn. The $329.99 Cdn price works out to $235.36 US. The Oasis 32GB cellular shows at $429.99 Cdn ($306.68 US) on Amazon.ca.

Also as earlier mentioned, there is no such animal as "Special Offers" for Amazon ereaders sold via Amazon.ca.

What I find truly humourous is:
  1. The Paperwhite in Canada matches the Clara HD price at $139.99 Cdn ($99.84 US) while Amazon.com shows the Paperwhite at $149.99 US ($210.30 Cdn) and the basic Kindle at $109.99 US ($154.22 Cdn).
  2. Which makes the Clara HD or the Paperwhite in Canada a lower cost option than ordering the basic Kindle in the US.
  3. Converting Amazon.com pricing to Canadian dollars, the cost of a Kindle ereader is higher ordering from Amazon.com.
  4. I used Tor with an US IP address to check the pricing. What? I don't live in Amherst?

We know that Kobo is better then Kindle.

What I want to know is how does Onyx Boox compare with Pocketbook?

I'm not sure why there is a debate about the MSRP of various products. Do you pay MSRP for anything? I can't recall the last time I did.
To the best of my knowledge, Amazon has the best sales. When I bought my Oasis (latest model) there was a steep discount on the device and I traded in an old device for another 25% off, plus I had a $15 coupon for joining Audible. In the end with all discounts applied I paid about $120 for my Oasis.
So if you live in the US, especially if you have and old device to trade in, watch for sales and you can get a killer deal.

Did anyone read what I've written???? There are no "Special Offers" on Kindle ereaders sold in Canada. Logically, this would imply there is no option to shell out money to have those advertisements removed.

Looking at the American site, why would anyone buy a Kindle with "Special Offers" for $20.00 US less and turn around and pay $20.00 US to have them removed? Unless the non-Special Offers variant is not available, why would anyone in the possession of a moiety of their senses go that route?

My guess would be that many purchasers don't understand what 'special offers' implies.

For most features I probably agree with you. But there is one thing where Pocketbook is way behind, and that is for actual reading.

The stock reading program is old and have few-ish features. It may be good enough for most, but compared to Kobo's reading features it's so far behind it's silly. Especially since Pocketbook has one of the best apps! The android app is excellent and possible the most up-to-date of all available. If they ported that to their e-readers, they would get an amazing product.

Sure. But then the OP and I both reside in the good ol' USA. So Canadian policies are of no help.

But sometimes it's inconvenient to have to wait for a sale. Also, if you order from Canada to the US, the price is lower due tot he exchange rate. I had a look earlier and the Forma at $199.99 CDN is about $149 US. So yes it will be a little bit higher with the exchange rate fee on your card, but it's still going to cost less.

Somebody who got the cheap version as a gift. Somebody who didn't have the extra money at the time of purchase, but then has some more available. Somebody, as pointer out, who decides that ads are really too annoying to bear.

(Me, I'd just not buy a device from a company who want to go that route - not to mention if they tried to estimate my ad-susceptibility as low as $20. I mean, the very fact that they sell device with in-built ads is offensive to me)
