looks as if it's something I can put somewhere for Calibre to make a night mode. I'm not a programmer, I work in accounting with a strong understanding of various aspects of computers since I teach clients. I have no idea what to do with it. does it go in one of the Calibre preference modules?

It will be in the nest release, if you want it sooner you need to download the calibre source code and run from it, see manual for instructions.

thank you. in my youth, in windows 3.1 and up I had mad skills and was the go to person. not these days. now I'm all accounting and taxes

There is no dark mode setting on windows 7 for calibre to use. On windows 7 simply set the system theme to use dark colors.

Thanks for the automated Dark Mode for Windows 10!

It looks great with calibre style, but it get mixed up when using system style (see Preferences > Look and feel window, for instance; no visible text there).

Also, I can't find a way to restore the standard alternating colors for lines on the main screen. This happens both for calibre and system style.

Actually, you don't have to do anything with calibre. You only need to set dark mode on Windows 10.
But this change will only be available on the next release. In my case, I'm running from source to test it. This way, I can use Kovid's latest code.
If you are interested in running from source, here you have the instructions. But, as said, no need for that. When 4.6 get released, this will work automatically (just be sure to use calibre style on Preferences > Look and feel).
