Calibre 4.3 - Tag Browser Opens on Start

Hi,

I'm using Calibre 4.3 on macOS 10.15.1

When I open Calibre the Tag Browser always opens. Hiding it works, but it reappears when I next open Calibre.

Ideas?

That sounds like settings are not being saved, probably because of a permission error. run calibre in debug mode by right clicking the preferences button and you will get more info.

If your mac is taking 30+minutes to start calibre then you have problems, and not with calibre.

This is my Linux PC starting calibre from a cold boot up--i.e. power on boot.

Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon
Intel© Core™ i5-3470S CPU @ 2.90GHz × 4

Try running calibre from a terinal as

/Applications/calibre.app/Contents/MacOS/calibre --ignore-plugins

and then quit calibre with the tag browser hidden and then run it again the same way and see if th etag browser stays hidden

Is that Your (created) log entry? Maybe the text should read Milliseconds ?
That would be more consistent with what the OP saw.

No it is seconds, not milliseconds, run it for yourself and check.

My tag browser also suddenly kept opening on startup after having used it once. It stopped doing it after I played around with my settings, but I have no idea what I did to make that happen.

About the weird startup time in the debug log: it does that here too. It seems like it only ends the 'startup' when you quit Calibre.

23 Seconds on an old Dell is still not bad)

Put an SSD in it, you can get a new DATARAM 240gb for around $30 on ebay, check on Amazon also.

There is some other recent (windows Video) issues with this beast.

Gobs of RAM, and a 10K RPM drive and it has always been a slightly slow Calibre start.

Mine starts in 16 seconds. And that's on a relatively new PC with 16 GB RAM and a SSD. But then, my library is huge, I have lots of custom columns including composites, a ton of plugins and a few color/icon rules. I expect all those play their part. When I tried with a small library of 1600 books, I got the starting time down to 5 seconds.
