Oops...thanks for the correction. 256gig of storage was what I meant. Enough that I don’t need a memory card for downloading tv shows and movies for trips. Of course, it’s still a lot less risk to travel with an $80 tablet than a $500 one |

I'm curious about the "better battery" claim. "Up to 12 hours" seems extremely conservative to me. My 2017 model sees considerable use (reading, web browsing/shopping, emailing) from 6am to 10pm on one charge nearly every day. Are they talking 12 hours continuous screentime, or what? |

30% improvement might not be “upgrade worthy”, but it’s still nice and at a low price point. I’d hope it would make the web browsing experience better.

I've had several Fire tablets, and won't buy another. I strongly dislike android. I had the very first Fire, a 8.9" and 7" second gen, an HDX 7", and a 5th gen 10" picked up as a refurb. The early ones were fun to play on, but after using an iPad, I never looked back. That 10" was a piece of junk. My daughter-in-law uses it now for reading magazine and cookbooks. The first 2 7" Fires were freebies, given to the so called Pros on the old amazon forums.

It's going to be pretty hard for someone who actively dislikes Android to fairly rate a Fire tablet, I think. I don't dislike iPads at all. I just can't afford them. |

The Fires were ok to play on, and watch video. But the lack of stability really bugged me. When I needed something for more than playing, I tried an iPad, having gotten comfortable with an iPhone 4s. The grandkids still use that first iPad, and an old iPad Air is happily mounted in the kitchen, even running iOS 13. They just work.

I’ve been a fan of the Fire Tablets since the first 7” one. I set my expectations to he level of the price. I don’t expect them to be as good as an iPad....and they are not. But...are they useful? For me, yes. They are cheap enough for me to give out as gifts...to buy each of my kids and wife their own. They are suitable for watching streaming shows like Netflix. For reading books, interacting with social media...browsing the web. The browsing the web...particularly participating on web forums...they aren’t so good. With the Walmart Onn and it’s “near stock” Android 9....I also have a portable torrent file downloader.

The Fire range are barely Android, really. They're Amazon's Android-based version of the iPad locked garden. The only Android maker I know of who really seems to be trying with tablets is Huawei, their MediaPads are premium devices that I have liked enough to buy two iterations of, despite their non-budget price. Samsung's lack of interest in making serious tablets can be seen from comparing their specs with the premium Huaweis. It's little wonder "iPad" has become the generic term for tablets, at least Apple cares enough to keep polishing the range.

I got a super deal by trading in an old Dot 2 for the new Show 5 during Prime Day. The few dollars you get on the trade-in itself isn't all that great, but the 25% off the full price of a new device is killer. Now that you mention it, maybe I should re-think the HD 8. The HD 10 is still too large for my use. Last edited by tubemonkey; 10-07-2019 at 08:50 PM.

Yep. Same here. For what little use I have for a tablet, my Fire 7 works fine — though I should have gotten the 16 GB version instead of 8 GB.
