Kobo Touch find in thrift store

My wife knows that I love my Kobo Aura H2O and recently my Libra H2O that she picked this up for me at a local thrift store. It was still in the box and has never been used.

Heck of a deal as long as the battery works.

It works perfectly!

I updated the firmware as it had the stuff from 2011. The difference is huge.

A new in box Touch with a working battery?? What a find. I'd be curious to know how long it lasts before needing charging.

For that price I would gladly suffer the cost of putting in a new battery.

I've got a black Touch just like that one and (when not in use) the battery holds a charge for three or four weeks.

Nice deal! Because it was new-in-box I think you have officially beat MY awesome $2 Touch that I picked up this summer at the local car boot sale. Sadly although it had been barely used, the black "soft-touch" had gone all sticky and gross! I tried to remove it but just made even more of a mess of it My hubby says it looks very "ghetto" now... lol

So far my black one hasn't gotten tacky, but I prefer the white "A" Touch because it's hard plastic instead of that "soft touch" material (whatever it is). Even though the white one's battery is not as strong, that's probably the one I'll keep (if I keep either). This tacky "disease" has made my original eReader (a Nook Simple Touch) only usable in a its cover now -- which is kind of frustrating.

It is very annoying, and makes you wonder how many still-viable products are being thrown out just because of that! If it was easy to fix/remove, I'd do it...but it's pretty much a part of the plastic itself. I had this happen to a portable hard drive I'd paid a fair bit for but not used much really over the years... It was a sticky mess when I eventually needed it. That made me cringe a bit. What a waste of $$!

AFAIK, there is no remedy for soft-touch rot other than to abrade it off with wire wool and WD-40 (or perhaps lighter fluid).
Looks messy afterwards but at least you can bear to touch it.
Whether you invest the time and effort depends how much you love the earth.

I tried this... Nothing worked. I ended up using acetone-based nail varnish remover, but of course that REALLY made a mess of it, and can eat away the base plastic itself (there wasn't a great line between the sticky surface and the actual plastic). Plus, if you aren't careful and get it on the screen you will destroy the substrate. On the plastic, even if you can get it even-looking, it leaves it with white streaks. I would NOT recommend any of this! I ended up with a sink full of sticky black plastic, sore hands from all of the intensive scrubbing and a worse-off eReader. NEVER AGAIN.

Let's just say the top bezel of the old Touch now has a "dog's dinner" sort of look to it. Glad I didn't go hog-wild and start on the back panel at the same time!

Can be cut pretty clean with a razor or exacto knife.

Basically you can use any color or pattern sticky wallpaper(cant think of the right name) which is usually used for sticking over old furniture, as fake kitchen or bathroom tiles etc.Probably can be found at other places for different purpose too.

That's carbon fiber, I had a cell phone case made of something similar. I liked it's feel. Problem is, I seriously doubt I could ever do a decent job of pasting it on my readers. But it might be worth trying.

(Looking it a little closer — it's not actually carbon fiber, rather vinyl made to look like it. Still would be better than tacky "rubber rot.")
