Since I lost the job I have a lot of time on my hands. I thought I could catch up on my reading, but the lady of the house said, "Make yourself useful, stop that reading, the front room needs to be redone"

That room is the library! :horror:

I had to haul everything out of there through one flight of stairs, so forget the use of wheels. Arrrgh!

Now me back is out! :damned books:

If they all were electronic you could have moved them in a fraction of a second and your back would still be in good shape.

By coincidence, I was looking for a good Canterbury Tales just last evening. Nothing readable in public domain, and nothing "pretty" under $35. Why isn't this available yet, I wonder? It's a requirement for college lit students, would be nice to have a free PD copy that is in good shape.

Well, I just answered my own question. If it were available, college bookstores couldn't charge $50 against students' Pell grants for the books.

That wasn't me, that was the Nation Snacker. It is Friday, after all. She's not too strong today, because I think the sunshine and lovely day are keeping her tame.

Wait, you lost your job? That's dreadful, Yvan. I'm terribly sorry. Although I could easily tell you were killing yourself with long hours at it almost every day. I hope you find a suitable, but let's hopeful less stressful, replacement soon.

See, while I do clear out my pbooks occasionally, I do still love to buy in new ones. Pbook-browsing is one of my dearest pleasures, and always has been ever since I started (it's one of the reasons I'll be absent from Tuesday-Thursday in the coming week). 'Course, in my new place, pbook-shops are few, and their stock minimal. So it takes a visit to Brisbane, like I've just done this weekend (and a visit to Sydney, like I'm doing this week), to get my book-buying buzz back.

So, the weekend's purchases are done, and, to keep this related to Mobileread, half of the purchases were based on MR recommendations:
  • Romulus, My Father, by Raimond Gaita (not MR-related. I've read his The Philosopher's Dog)
  • Brief Interviews With Hideous Men, by David Foster Wallace (I think Dr. Drib is indirectly responsible for this one, based on his(?) mention of Infinite Jest)
  • Collected Stories, by Saul Bellow (not MR-related. I couldn't get The Adventures of Augie March, so this was an alternative)
  • The Smoking Diaries, by Simon Gray (not MR-related. Based on a blogged journo review)
  • The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, by Steig Larsson (I think this was a combination of MR members...pshrynk? tompe? I think several others)
  • The Elephant Vanishes, by Haruki Murakami (Dr. Drib again)
  • The World of Jeeves, by P.G. Wodehouse (Indirectly suggested, or maybe even directly, Queen Zelda)
  • Modern Salads, by Gourmet Taveller Magazine (not MR-related. A neighbour lended it to us, so we wanted our own copy. Some fantastic salads in there)

There's still more list-items that I couldn't find in Brisbane, so I'll still have some browsing to do in Sydney. I also bought a couple of DVDs, again half of them based on MR suggestions:
  • Hedwig & The Angry Inch (not MR-related. I've seen this before, and wanted it in the collection to watch again (and again), as I loved it)
  • The Princess Bride (I've never seen this, and it's been suggested a few times before, but someone here (EmJay? LazyScot?) pushed me over the edge

So, I guess I'm never going to overcome the need for bookshelves. There's nothing that currently covers the photography monographs, nor likely to be any (that satisfies me), so I'm always likely to buy them. I can't make any excuse for some of the pbooks like listed above (some of them maybe available in ebook form)...like I said, book-browsing...pleasure...and I'm a Hedonist at heart ).

Cheers,
Marc

I am tempted to do the same, but many of my pbooks have personal meaning. eg. they take me back to a time and place.

I also like the ambience in the reading room, with 4 staked book shelves..
