We never bought a lot of books when I was younger, we had a well-stocked library around.

I'd have to check my own library what is in there, as I never sold or gave away my books... I did get some more books by my favourite writer (which is Thea Beckman) when I started college though... I still want to have all her books (in pbook and ebook format if possible), but I doubt they'll ever be published in ebook format.

I left everything else at home, but took many of my books - they were my treasured companions growing up in rural southern Illinois with no library access during the summer - took me away from the boredom and chaos.

The Little Princess
The Silver Crown
A Wrinkle in Time (the first three books actually)
about 4 of the Little House on the Prairie books
The Endless Steppe - we're doing this book as a read aloud currently

It gives me such joy to share these with my children - truly the best part of my childhood was my small collection of books.

I still have my original copies of "Tom Kitten" and "Wait Till the Moon is Full."

Great books, both of them.

Mine is the Gutenburg Bible 42-line first edition; one of the 45 that was printed on vellum (the ink was still wet when it was given to me.) Anywho, it's a two volume set and pretty thick (lots and lots of pages.) I never did read it all the way through. I found it a bit intimidating as a child (not enough pictures) and I'm just not sure the characters were that believable.

I'm still waiting for the movie.

But surely I jest. I'm not quite THAT old. Actually my father got it new and he handed it down to me.

Oh, did you want a Serious answer? Sorry - wrong thread for me.

Carry on.

Mine is "The Book of a Thousand Poems" that my mother bought around 1954 (9 years before I was born). I read it to my six year old daughter.

I have a very battered, and autographed, copy of 'A Ring of Endless Light'. The spine is broken and the pages are brittle and falling out -- I must have read it dozens of times. I also have all my Little House on the Prairie books and 'Indian Captive' by Lois Lenski.

A copy of Alice in Wonderland that was printed during the paper rations in WWII. It even has the dust jacket, although it's quite tattered. A friend gave it to me and I treasured it without even knowing how valuable it could have been as a child. I still don't know, I just love the book.

I have no physical remnants of books, but I did buy The Mouse and the Motorcycle in e-book because I loved it so much as a child. The oldest book I have is a very beat up Ace Double with Space Willies on one side and I think Six Worlds Yonder on the other.

The kitten in the Dick and Jane series was Fluffy and was used to introduce two syllable words...

Which is why I gave up on them when they introduced the Gila Monster called Cassiopeia into the series.

"Oh, see Dick. Oh, see Jane. Oh, see Cassiopeia. Oh, see Cassiopeia perambulate..."

Cheers,
Marc (I only "read" them for the pictures anyway)

I have no idea what happened to most of my childhood books - presumably they got given to charity at various stages. Including, I suspect, the lovely old illustrated dictionary that I used to spend hours poring over as a child. Initially it was simply because of the pretty pictures and the amazement that a book could have dents in the pages to put your fingers in, then later on for all the other bits that went with it - the words, the look and feel of it etc. I know some of the flora and fauna and bird guides I had are still with my parents - my mum won't let me have them back because she likes them too much...

Most of the fiction and other non-fiction, though, I suspect has long gone (I read anything I could get my hands on, so as well as things like the Famous Five I was reading James Herroitt, Joyce Grenfells, a range of biographies and autobiographies, and whatever fiction my aunt and nanna had bought or borrowed from the library and left within reach).

Actually, from my teens, I do still have my copy of Tschiffely's Ride. And a very badly bound and edited hardback edition of all of Jane Austen's works.

My favorite is probably the Better Homes and Gardens Storybook. It's an anthology from the 50s that has a lot of poems and stories with great illustrations. My favorite parts are probably a poem called The King's Breakfast (by A.A. Milne) and a story about a town where all the dolls come to life.

It had been my father's, and Granny found it and gave it to me when I was 5 or 6. I used to carry it around and try to make anyone within range read something from it to me. Granny never would, because she said that she spent too many years reading it to my dad and it was time someone read the stories to her for a change. So we'd take turns picking stories for me to read, and I'd get really into it and try to do different voices for the characters. That always made her laugh.

My mom keeps all "The Boxcar Children" books as they were the one i learned to read with. I remember the first book the most, and it was fun to re-read years later. The rest of them turned into typical youth mystery books but its still nice to have them all for my kids (that don't exist yet).
