By the way, if anyone remembers Magazine of Horror from the the '60s, as I do, you may be interested in knowing that archive.org has quite a number of them - FREE, if it's not restricted in your country. Check your local copyright first.

This is the magazine that really introduced me to Robert E. Howard, Seabury Quinn, Clark Ashton Smith, H.P. Lovecraft, et al.

The great thing about these magazines is that they fit PERFECTLY on a Kobo Aura One (or similarly sized screen), due to the digest-sized nature of the magazine.

Alan Dean Foster's science fiction/horror Into The Out Of is on sale for $1.20 at Amazon. Not a great book, but I enjoyed it when I read it years ago.

The new cover is dull compared to the original.

Earth is being invaded by the shetani—-spirit creatures so small and stealthy that only one man knows about the increasing peril. The potential savior is an African elder named Olkeloki who is capable of fighting evil both in this world and the spirit one. Medieval magic, murder, and mayhem!

It is 1164, and for a hundred years England has been ruled by the Normans. A young Saxon boy named Durwin, crippled by a childhood accident, had caught the eye of a Norman sage teaching at a rural school of magic. Realizing that the boy had promise, Durwin was made stable boy, and eventually allowed to attend classes.

Now twenty, Durwin is proficient enough that he is assigned to teach, but the other sages refuse to promote him and he is hassled by the Norman juniors for his disability. But those troubles turn out to be the least of his worries when he manages to corrects errors in an ancient corrupted spell, which promptly prophesies murder.

Sure enough, word soon reaches the school that one of the local count’s house sage has died, perhaps slain by black magic. Durwin is whisked away to the family’s castle, only to find that one death was only the beginning. The young sage quickly learns of a dizzying plot to assassinate King Henry. Dropped into the middle of the complex politics of England’s royal courts, can Durwin stop them in time?

This is a somewhat humorous fantasy set in a society where bands of mercenaries are as popular a modern-day rock bands. There's a sequel, but I think this one's standalone.

I hear you. My enthusiasm drops to near zero when I find a book is part of a series. If the books are only loosely linked I'm OK with that as long as the ongoing storyline is concluded in that book.

Fully agree with you there. I've enjoyed some series but the books, especially the first one, have to stand alone.

I like that phrase, 'hanging out with the characters'. It encapsulates my reasons for wanting one author to write more books in a series I really liked the world building in. She's commented on her blog about a possible second trilogy or side books. Fingers crossed!
