The one thing that kills an iPad on standby is Bluetooth. If you leave BT enabled, the battery drains fairly quickly. Turn it off and the battery will last for weeks.

Maybe pwalker8 will be kind enough to go with the oasis and report results, since the test matches his primary use case.

It seems the only thing deep sleep does is prevent battery from draining much more quickly compared to older Paperwhites. I tried disabling deep sleep on my PW4 and it lasted like 1-2 days on standby.

1. Indexing a bunch of new books you load onto a Kindle takes a while and drains battery fast. Mine was still indexing. 2. I needed to turn on airplane mode, which disables: 3G cellular (if you have that), Wifi, and Bluetooth. Battery now is right where I'd expect. It dropped 1% over night in sleep mode. When I read with the light set at "10", and it only drops 3 to 4 % points per hour. Of course mine's new, so I don't know how this battery will break in and perform over time.

Cold (<0C) is also a problem for batteries. Why not leave the charge cord attached if you are really worried. ? My cigarette lighter is on the ignition switch (and was for all my cars since 1973 models) BTW 4hours on a 1A USB charger takes my K4 from flat (won't stay on) to full. |

I got the new Oasis yesterday. I got the 32G model, so it easily holds all my Kindle ebooks. Just wish that Amazon had a way to say "just download everything" by no, you have to download them one by one. I now have everything downloaded on the Oasis and created a few collections to hold the various books in my to be read list. I just need to remember to remove and add ebooks as I read and buy them respectively. It fits easily in my console. Right now, I've got it connected to the charger on my kitchen. It's still indexing, which sucks down the juice like mad. Once it finishes that, I'll see how well the battery last sitting in the car. I'll have it hooked in to charge when the car is on.

I hope you enjoy using your new Oasis - it's my favourite reading device by far. The extra 1" of screen size makes a surprising amount of difference to readability!

I do manage my Kobo device via calibre. In general, the first thing that I do when I get a new book is remove the DRM and convert the book to epub format. I don't bother converting the various epub books that I've purchased over the years (Baen, Sony and Apple) to mobi format though.

It's very, very thin glass, which means that it's extremely unlikely to break due to thermal shock. It's thick glass that breaks in those circumstances.

As I said before, a glass backed screen can shatter when going from one temp extreme to another and I have no idea if a plastic backed screen would melt in your car in the summer.
