Advice on buying the new paperwhite

That actually depends. If one subscribes to KU, it's a darned good deal.

Besides, I doubt we'll see much more than $20 off initially and that, probably a few months down the line. I have a bricked PW3 so for me this was a no-brainer (even at just $5 trade-in value instead of $25).

Well, here's the way I look at it ... First I don't subscribe to or want Kindle Unlimited, so that $60 is thrown out. (I think when I bought my Kindle Basic 8th Generation I had three months I didn't use.) Second, the offer for a Paperwhite is between $5 to $25, so it could be (probably will be) less than $25, I'm guessing $10 to $15 -- let's say $15. That's a $47.50 discount. So you've got a Paperwhite 4 for $82.50, but you lose your Paperwhite 1.

I don't know what the $130 Paperwhite 4 is going on sale for -- but I'll accept the $110 price (they may drop to $100). So your Paperwhite 4 (on sale) costs $110. That's $27.50 more than trading in the Paperwhite 1, but you've still got the Paperwhite 1 that still sells for $35 to $55 on eBay. And there is a chance that the price of Paperwhite 4 will be $100 on Black Friday and for Christmas, and there's a chance that Paperwhite 1 will only get $5 on trade-in. Now keeping the Paperwhite 1, you could looking a difference in price of $12.50 between trade and waiting for a sale. And you can still sell the Paperwhite 1 on eBay -- or give it away, or keep it for a spare. There's also going to be refurbished Paperwhite 4s at some point, which routinely sell for $20 less than new, and often go on sale for $20 off. So there's a decent chance a refurbished Paperwhite 4 will sell for $90 not too far into the future.

At any rate, I personally would rather keep the Paperwhite 1, but then I don't I don't like getting rid of my eReaders, so my opinion is probably skewed.

That's why I said it depends. If one is already paying $10/mo for a KU subscription, the PW4 offer is a pretty good deal.

And nope, it's $25 for a PW1 in working condition. I was actually surprised Amazon gave the same $25 for all functional PW models. Amazon's trade-in offer ($32.50 + $25 = $57.50 total) is actually better than what you could sell it for on ebay.

Mind, I probably wouldn't make that trade if the PW1 was my only jailbroken Kindle. I rely in LibrarianSync quite heavily.

As it is, I've got:
PW2 2GB stock 5.9.x - registered with Amazon
PW3 4GB bricked
PW3 4GB JB 5.8.11 - unregistered, sideload only
PW3 32GB JB 5.8.11 - registered with Amazon
PW3 32GB JB 5.8.11 - unregistered, sideload only

I'm getting rid of the bricked PW3 this go-around. PW2 to follow next time there's a deal (25% off trade-in offer is limited to one per customer). The brick, I can't use. The PW2, I don't like using because of PPI. My minimum preferred is around 260 ppi (e.g. Kobo Aura HD). The PW2 looks a wee bit too blurry for my taste.

Okay. I misread the offer. I saw the $5-$25 range, but didn't read the disclaimer close enough — Once inspected, if the item is in a lower condition: (Pick one option) — I guess that means if it's not in working condition, or with a cracked screen.

That is a good deal then, saves having to sell the old Paperwhite on eBay.

Yes, exactly. On that page I DO NOT see the KU offer. It used to be right at the top.

Thanks. The mobile site only shows the trade in offer, the desktop site has the KU offer . I am not sure if my account is eligible though as it is currently on a 12 month KU plan with another 12 month lined up right behind it.

It should be. According to fine print, it pauses payments for 6 months for KU subscribers on monthly plan or extends subscription for those with prepaid plans.

Except, the fine print also says that the KU offer has to be redeemed by january 31st, 2019. My current plan does not roll over until february. I just confirmed with CS, and no, I cannot use the KU offer then before it expires since I already have a new prepaid plan lined up.

While in chat I also asked and got told that the front of the screen is glass like the Voyage and Oasis.

For existing Kindle Unlimited subscribers who are on prepaid plan(s), the 6-month plan will start when your current prepaid plan(s) end, and automatic renewals will restart at its conclusion unless you disable auto-renew during that 6-month period.

I dunno. The way I understand this is you can redeem it and the 6 months just gets banked in your account. I guess we'll know for sure if Amazon sends you the code and allows you to redeem it.
