McKay’s Bees: A Novel Thomas McMahon

I forgot to check in January, but this month's Univ. of Chicago Press free monthly book is McKay’s Bees: A Novel Thomas McMahon. Expires 2/28 Moving from Massachusetts to Kansas in 1855 with his new wife and a group of German carpenters, Gordon McKay is dead set on making his fortune raising bees—undaunted by Missouri border ruffians, newly-minted Darwinism, or the unsettled politics of a country on the brink of civil war. |

How We See the Sky: A Naked-Eye Tour of Day and Night

The March freebie from the University of Chicago is How We See the Sky: A Naked-Eye Tour of Day and Night by Thomas Hockey. How We See the Sky gives us back our knowledge of the sky, offering a fascinating overview of what can be seen there without the aid of a telescope. Thomas Hockey begins by scanning the horizon, explaining how the visible universe rotates through this horizon as night turns to day and season to season. Subsequent chapters explore the sun’s and moon’s respective motions through the celestial globe, as well as the appearance of solstices, eclipses, and planets, and how these are accounted for in different kinds of calendars. |

This month's free ebook from University of Chicago Press is cover image The Last Asylum: A Memoir of Madness in Our Times by Barbara Taylor. “A remarkable memoir-hybrid that opens up history from the inside.… A visceral and supremely intelligent account of [Taylor’s] breakdown and psychoanalytic treatment in the last years of the asylum system.”—Alison Light, Guardian |

This month's free ebook from the University of Chicago is The Bittersweet Science edited by Carlo Rotella and Michael Ezra. “Imagine the difference between watching a boxing match and being in one. The same could be said of the difference between reading about it in the new book The Bittersweet Science and in any previous publications on pugilism.”—Wicked Local University of Chicago Press free ebook for May |

Pugilism: "the art or practice of fighting with the fists; boxing." I knew what that meant, I just knew that others wouldn't.

Heck, we're readers. I bet many here DO know what pugilism is. I won a game of Taboo once by knowing that.

The context indicated that it might have something to do with boxing, but that's all that I could surmise. After reading your post, and re-reading mine, I realized that it might be related to "pugnacious," of which I know the meaning. All of us are readers, but you've got to admit that that word is a little bit obscure, at least to Americans. I'm glad that you won a game of Taboo with that word, but "pugilism" stinks as a Scrabble word--not a particularly great number of letters, and none of them have much value.
