Most Recent Update for Oasis 2
So I see two 5.9.6 updates for the Oasis 2:
"Update_Kindle_Oasis.5.9.6.bin" and
"Update_Kindle_All_New_Oasis.5.9.6.bin"

The first says for 8th generation and the second says for the 9th generation

Why do the morons at Amazon even use the words "generation" - totally meaningless and how des one find out what "generation" your device is
I have a 32 Gb Champagne Gold WiFi Oasis - which device is it and what version of 5.9.6 do I use

The original Oasis is 8th generation and the new Oasis is 9th. The generations are roughly based on the year the model first came out.

I have trouble trying to figure out what generation my paperwhite is. Since I bought it this year I thought it was the latest model. Apparently not for the update was rejected

The Paperwhites are diificult. I had to make 3 trials before I found the right one to my elderly paperwhite.
Fortunately the device itself knows what is right and what is not.

The generation # is # of years from the original Kindle release minus one (because there was a two gap between the Kindle and the Kindle 2 and a one year gap between all successive generations).

Thus the 2017 Oasis being released 10 years from the original Kindle is a 9th generation Kindle. The original Oasis was released in 2016 and is thus an 8th generation Kindle.

You can also go directly to the firmware of your ereader by following links from the My Devices and Content page. Or you could just wait for Amazon to push the firmware update through wifi to your Kindle.

FYI Amazon is using the word generations by textbook definition. Every time they update the hardware and mass produce a new family of Kindles that is considered a new generation. It is only meaningless if you're in a rage.

If you could list five companies that tried to deliberately confuse its customers (and I don't think you can), you would have a list of five companies that are no longer in business.
On the other hand, if you are saying that some of Amazon's customers get confused from time to time in dealing with technical issues, I would agree.
