new Oasis battery life - Page 23

I set up the annoying password sign in on my kindles to discourage me from always opening and closing and it seems to have helped the battery life. I tinker with the device less frequently

Lol ! I've just switched to the battery symbol instead. It doesn't help the battery life. The percentage drop was distracting for me from reading. I can't read level 10. Just like the old Sammy Hagar song " I can't drive. 55 " It's funny but it's kind of the same situation. The 55 speed limit was set to save gas back in the 1980's . Well I can't save my battery by reading on level 10 either. I know there must be many who can't and are in the same boat as we are.

YES! I can not read at 10 it is way too dark. I need 13- 15. I wish we can hide the battery bar without having a book open. As soon as you switch a book there it is the status bar LOL

Somehow today it dropped by 20% in 1 day! I have not a clue why. I only read for 30 minutes. maybe I need a tiny tiny piece of dark tape to put over that part of the screen showing the battery bar lol

What did you do before illuminated screens? I started using Kindles with the DX and it has never been illuminated. Just read in a room with adequate light and the screen illumination is not needed or read in bed with a good reading light mounted on the bed headboard. I leave the Oasis 2 light off or as low as it can be set.

I used a light before I bought my first Paperwhite . I read mostly at night so I loved seeing the e ink devices with a built in light. This is my 4th Kindle with a light. PW1, PW3, Voyage and now Oasis 2. They all are great but this is the first Kindle I've had to think about the battery. I think that surprised a lot of people. Who bought one at first, and now know that they have to conserve on the Oasis 2. Not just the light but also Wifi and audio.

I guess I'm just going to use the battery up faster to read comfortably on a higher light level. I already plan to trade it back to Amazon in a couple years. So I guess it really doesn't matter at this point. Normally I keep my devices longer. I'll wait and see what they come out with next. Maybe a larger battery next time.

Yeah I have seen that too, I don't know how accurate that persentage is though. I have also seen the green light come on when I charge mine and it shows 99% then I'll leave it on the charger a little longer and then it says 100%. I really wonder if our percentages are all that accurate anyway. They seem to vary and make no sense at times.

What does the light mean? I seen it on without being on the charger and not needing charged

The green led is also on while it is shutting down and starting up. If you see it without doing anything and it is not on the charger, not good. Means it probably thought it is a good idea to turn on or off for no good reason. My wife's Fintie cover is already so wore out that it slides around so much it turns on before the cover gets opened. Ordered a new origami Fintie cover that appears to be better made and has magnets on the front to keep it closed and in place (similiar to the original Amazon covers).

With the old cover she lately noticed more than normal battery drain. Will see if the new cover remedies that.

I was worried about that too, with my first fintie cover. It seemed to flop around more than I liked. It's the one with the soft top snap in cover. I ordered another fintie snap in cover the thinnest one they make, and it's much better no flopping around. It feels less top heavy.

I see the green light only when it's charging, it will change from yellow to green when charged. It would turn green sooner than a 100% charge. Not by much but I would just leave it plugged in till I saw 100%.

I wonder why you see the green light when it's not charging ? I would call Amazon to see what they say. Maybe it's a defective light ?

I also saw my Oasis 2 change from 70% down to 50%. I was reading and closed the cover to get something, only took a few mins. When I opened it again it was at 50 %. Then I went back to device options to see if the battery symbol showed the same 1\2 battery. It didn't it showed the 3\4 battery. I switched back to the % and then it also showed 70 %. I have no idea why the battery showed 50% before. It must have been a glitch. I haven't seen it do that again so far.

I got a fintie cover on ebay for $8.99 and its the exact same thing that fintie sells on their website for $20 something dollars

That's a good deal .

I think the trouble with my first cover was that it seemed to make the Oasis 2 off balance. The top was thicker but didn't add a lot of weight. Even so it seemed to flop around more. I think because the Oasis is so well balanced because of it's shape. I got a thinnest one. It seems to stay in place better.

Are you only getting 2 days from your voyage because the battery is old and worn? I retract the charge Oasis every day advice. I think you are correct that you would wear out the Oasis battery before you felt you got your money's worth.

Maybe a new Voyage is best for you.

My first Voyage went totally wonky in several different ways after a year and a half of use. I bought the one I'm using now last July. Neither one of them were great for battery life, needing to be charged every day if I read a lot, sometimes every other day. I haven't really added up how many hours a day I read, but it's more than 4 hours a day - so even two days at that rate it doesn't get the advertised battery life where Amazon figures on people reading 1/2 hour a day and the battery lasts for weeks.

I hate not knowing what to do. I really don't know that a new Voyage is the answer. Unless I'm mistaken, these things come with a year's warranty so I guess Amazon would let me trade in my current Voyage for a refurbed one, but I'm not sure I see the point in that either.

I guess what I really want is for Amazon to come out with a new/improved Kindle that has really good battery life - but I'm far more than old enough to know that I usually don't get what I really want. I'm just trying to figure out what the best thing is to settle for at this point.

Clawdia, if 2 new Voyages had unsatisfactory battery life for you, there isn't much hope for you being happy with a 7" Oasis. The Voyage battery has 25% more capacity than an Oasis battery. Maybe 2 readers with one always on a charger would work.

Maybe if enough people demand something like a 7" Voyage with a battery even larger than in the current Voyage, such a model will get built.

Everything is a trade off. I prefer not having a room brightly lit and appreciate the Kindle's built in lighting, but I am also lucky that 11 is bright enough for me. Have you considered increasing room lighting and turning the Kindle light brightness down or off?
