Anyway, the list in the her site for Arcane books list them in order. The only problem would be if you want to read Harmony/Arcane. Last edited by Terisa de morgan; 01-06-2018 at 05:13 PM. |

I can see the problem with Dark Hunter. That's a kick ass universe but there is a whole bunch of characters and they occasionally pop up in other's books. I think you're safe with Quick she has many standalones.
I once read historical where hero of previous book practically became a villain. Ruined both books for me. |

With the exception of the actual trilogies across all three pen names, the Arcane Society books are only loosely connected by the characters being members. Even the across time trilogies work as stand-alones. It's not like any of the characters are immortals and appear in the old England stuff, modern-day US, and then futuristic other planet
There are lots of Amanda Quick historicals that aren't Arcane Society. Her early one word titles are all stand-alones. I read all of the Arcane stuff as it was released, so didn't seem difficult to figure out. But if you need the order: Spoiler:
Or in chronological order: Spoiler:
They could actually be read in chronological order, it would be interesting anyway. I am a read in order type person but the series, as published, does bounce back and forth in time so I can understand not wanting to tackle it all. When it's a few months/half a year between books it doesn't seem like any big deal. I actually thought the intertwining of the various time periods was fun. But other than a few minor subplots, the books all really would work as stand-alones. The exception being the across-penname trilogies which are connected by a overarching plot, but even then the main mystery in each book is solved within that particular book. It's not like say the Psy Changeling series where each book builds on the one before like a giant jigsaw puzzle. You get some Easter eggs and more background if you read them all, but you could just read all of the AQ titles or only the JAK ones and I don't think it would be unsatisfactory. All that said, and as much as I loved many of the individual books, I don't think the Arcane Society series is necessarily her best work. Particularly as Amanda Quick. They are all paranormal murder-lite mysteries. My absolute favorite Amanda Quick titles are Ravished, Deception, and Scandal. I'd also recommend Affair, Dangerous, Mischief, Mystique, Rendezvous, Reckless, Seduction, Surrender, and With This Ring. ETA: as Terisa said, her JC titles that morphed into Arcane started as World of Harmony. Their connected by the fact they take place on the same planet, though many of the books feature/mention the same characters. But they're futuristic sci-fi. So on the surface have little in common with her English historicals. Hence the reason the various Arcane Society books truly do work as stand-alones. Also, I left out the three shorts she originally posted on Twitter which were later released as a freebie. I think might still be available. I collected all the entries from Twitter and made an epub before she decided to actually release them. They are short stories: two written as Fallon Jones, one of the characters from the series, and one which is just odd written as JAK as if she's going to the fictional town to interview him. It worked (kind of) as Twitter posts/promo for at the time upcoming book, but doesn't really make much sense. Last edited by library addict; 01-07-2018 at 05:14 AM. Reason: addition |

As library addict says. But a fair warning. Don't read a lot of JAK/Amanda Quick/Jayne Castle in a row. The internal structure (which I love and makes JAK my author to go -with Shelly Laurenston- when I need comfort reading) is always the same, so they can bore you if you read too much of it.

I don't remember the author I read a lot of historicals at the time. I was wary of all series after that and always checked summary to see if there is anything similar.

Wow, thanks for that list Library Addict! Back in the day, when she wrote mainly as Jayne Anne Krentz, I read a fair number of her books. Since I started reading romance again, even though I like PNR-lite, I've stayed away from the Arcane books because I was afraid to start yet another long running series that I would then never finish.
If the books don't really build on each other, then it'll be safe to try one or two that appeal to me. Speaking of Psy/Changeling, I was avoiding that series also, but then I won the first 3 books in a contest. Now I am thoroughly hooked and trying hard not to just binge my way through. Once it's done, I have the first two Guild Hunter books on my TBR mountain, so I think 2018 is going to be the year of Nalini for me.

FYI, today's Kindle Daily Deal is 51 romance novels on sale. Here's the link to all of the books: Kindle Daily Deal
The deal includes Tessa Dare's newest, The Duchess Deal, for $1.99. Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt, is also $1.99. Neither of those has been on sale before, so my one-click button got a bit of a workout this morning.

. While they don't HAVE to be read to get the full gist of the overarching political plot, many feature some of my favorite couples of the series.I usually reread the series in published order, but reread it in chronological order last year. I think I would stick with published order for first-time readers. And if you really don't want to jump back in time, I would say just to skip the novellas. You can always go back and read only the ones (novellas) with the characters you are interested in. The novella stories contribute to the world-building, but are more focused on the individual romance than the full-length books. All the major plot twists and turns take place in the full-length books only. Of course when you get to Allegiance of Honor you may be wondering who some of the characters are, but it's a huge cast so that can happen even when you've read everything

Hmm, I wasn't even paying any attention to the novellas, but I just checked the list and I'm sure it won't surprise anyone that I already have two of the multi-author anthologies, Night Shift, and Burning Up, on my towering TBR mountain. I even read the Ilona Andrews story in Night Shift but didn't remember there was also a Psy/changeling novella in there. At the time, I wasn't particularly interested since I wasn't reading that series. Good thing I didn't already trade it out. As for the rest, I'll probably try to pick up the two collections that are all Psy/Changeling, but as long as they don't impact the main storyline, I won't stress over them. |

I downloaded her collection of short stories, too.
![]() I had already have them in self-made epub format in Calibre* as I like to rate/number them all separately. Plus I'll admit the lack of order in the collection would drive me bonkers. They aren't in published order or chronological or even alphabetical ![]() Yes, I am a touch OCD about this kind of thing. ![]() ![]() * only the Psy/Changeling and Rock Kiss shorts. Though I'm amazed that I'd already read nearly all of the Guild Hunter shorts as I don't even read that series. |
