That was my thought as well. I could see installing the Google Play version of the app over the integrated Fire version potentially causing issues like that.

This is awesome. I have read all of those too.

I think the only book of hers I didn't like was Metro Girl (not a Plum book).

Surely the fire kindle app is a system qpp whcih play store cannot overwrite ?. And the sqme for the prime video app. I have that in play store and on my other tablet but it does not mess with the integrated fire tqblet version.
I am.aware that google wants to overwrite alexa app with w phone version, but it asks nicely and i say no thanks

update. As i thought. In settings ...qpps. Kindle is not in the downloaded apps.list. It appears only in the ALL column with other system qpps and.is version 10.xxxx the android play store app is version 8.xxxx
So it was amazon not google who updated this tablet and wiped my preferences....

Odd it shows up in my Google Play store as ready to update.

Some here do update Kindle and other apps through Play so yes it's possible if auto updates aren't disabled.

Yes. I also can see an entry in my available play store updates awaiting my permission to update on the fire tablet, but thwt confirms that the already updated installed version on the device must have been put there automatically by amazon , not by google
Not sure how i managed it but i think some google apps auto update on here, others ask first.
For many shared free apps, i want the google versions as they are newer Eg ebay, netflix, bbc news and sport. But i dont want qpps like amazon drive, alexa overwritten

Finally got it last night on the nexus and just now on my android phone. I like it. And it looks like a kindle when set to library. With the drop down items.

Update to this. I think google and amazon ARE afighting ovrt who gets to manage the kindle app on my fire tablet. I opened it today and my in-progress book and my preferences had gone again.
I suspect google tries to auto update the kindle app overnight, fails because it is a system app, leaves stuff messed up.?
So in play store on the fire tablet i have now disabled auto update for the specific kindle app.. Google should honour that. It does for other apps where i dont want autoupdate to run. Will see if my book and my preferences are still intact tomorrow.
If that fais i will have to consider removing kindle app from play library completely. I cant be repairing fire kindle reader each and every day

I have auto updates turned off. I just go once a week and update what apps I want. It works best on a Kindle Fire.

I like the new library page - it looks very like an eInk Kindle now. My only minor gripe is that if you switch the library view from "grid" to "list", you still see cover thumbnails; I'd prefer to see a straight text list, as the eInk devices offer. Overall, though, a nice improvement.

i am not sure - can you tell play that you want auto updates OFF on device A, but ON on device B ?

I prefer to disable only some specific apps on only 1 device - I want full auto on my samsung tablet, and I want the news sports & weather apps , ebay etc to auto update, the Amazon store versions are ancient/ poorly maintained so I have replace d all those amson ones with google equivalents
I also have a sideload of last but one version of sundance now app, with updates OFF, because their last update broke some functionality

Absolutely. It's a per-device setting.

so its per device and/or per app

I know how to disable it for an app - go to the 3 dots in top right on that app page of the store
so to disable all apps on a specific device from auto updating but only on that specific device is probably fairly obvious - will take a look - revert if stuck

I also know that what I should do - but lack the discipline - is do regular app backups [ via a backup/restore utility ]for all my most used ones, so that I can restore an older version if there's a bad update pushed out [without having to go look for the older versions on very dodgy sites

Yes, that was my thinking. If I change to list, I want a list. Otherwise what's the point. Can't get much on a screen with these mini thumbnails. Not that I can see anything anyway as tiny as they are.
