Making images full screen

Is there any way that you can place images in sigil and have them display full screen on a kindle, by which I mean without any white border around them? When I test the ebook on my kindle, I have to use the controls to select the image and zoom in to get them to display full size with no margins. What I'd like is for them to fill the screen without the reader having to do any work.

Kindles force margins (words per lime on the K4). So no. Margins is a user setting and that does not go to 0 (I hacked mine to 10. 5 either side)

I'm doing a picture book with text as part of the images. Seems strange that the kindle forces the pics to be smaller than they could be. Ah well, thanks for replying.

In that case, you might want to consider creating a fixed layout KF8 book.

With Fire tablets (and perhaps with other devices and apps), a tap will zoom the image to its full width (often not the same as filling the screen top to bottom). I think most Fire owners know that.

Indeed, one can use thumb&forefinger gestures to zoom in even more.

There is a way to do it. But the problem is that with different screen resolutions and screen sizes, it won't work across the different screen sizes/resolutions. The solution is screen specific. You can use negative margins. The problem is that you have the low res Kindle, the DX, the PW1, the PW3 and all need different negative margin sizes.

Not if you make it fixed layout, A.K.A properly. You can have it fill the screen and maintain aspect ratio even on different screen resolutions. It just upscales or downscales the content depending on the screen size. This at least should work with epub3 and most likely KF8.

EDIT: Looking further it doesn't seem like anybody really supports this. All you should have to do is add a viewport to the header the size of content but it seems like this only works on books that are specified as being entirely fixed layout. You can't have fixed layout pages and reflowable pages at the same time it seems on Kindle's or Kobos at least.

Thanks for all your replies. Surprising that such a simple option - basically a full-screen mode - is not a simple-to-execute instruction across all devices (like sticking "width = "100%"" after every image.)

To the best of my knowledge, this is not supported ANYWHERE. Not even on Azardi or Readium, et al. I've never even heard the idea discussed vis-a-vis making a book with mixed options.

Yea, doesn't really seem like it. But the idpf does give examples of this on their page about fixed layouts. Examples 3 & 5 are exactly this. So in theory epub 3 readers should support it.

It does have valid use cases, there's a lot of books with occasional full page images and things, kids books, biographies with photo inserts, etc. Even if it was just to get rid of the margins readers like to put every where. But I guess nobody feels the need to implement it.

Oh, believe me. I WISH it were supported. I have clients that would kiss my (insert anatomy part here) if I could, but...them's the berries, as somebody or other says.

I'd love it because we could make reflowable books with fixed elements, which would solve about 95% of all use cases.

But, for ePub capable Readers, you do not need fixed layout to get images full screen. Every ePub capable Reader I've used can have full screen images. In fact, I can even get the text to go to the edge of the screen. This is with Readers using RMDSK. It's just Kindles that are the problem.

And honestly, in 99.99% of all reflowable eBooks, there's no overwhelming and compelling reason that that last 18th" is the end-all and be-all. For those books where it is, there's fixed-layout. Things like children's picture books oughtn't to be reflowable, anyway, because you have text floating atop the image--that should be made in FXL, which does, in fact, then go to the edges.

Even if you don't want or need the text to go to the edge of the screen, the thing is that you can get graphics to do so. That's the issue here. So I can code images to be full screen yet have the text not be full screen. I do understand the uses for fixed layout. But I'm talking reflowing with full screen images which Kindles cannot do.

Without specifying specifically the device's resolution? I don't think so.

Even then to escape Kobo's page margin on RMDSK takes enabling full screen mode which requires editing a config file and a checkbox in settings.
