For what it's worth, I ordered Friday Evening when showing in stock.

Order status is now showing "Awaiting Stock", and have just received an email from them this morning stating:

"At the moment we are having slight problems getting the product from our supplier. We don't have an exact date as to when the goods will be in stock, but will ship it to you as soon as they arrive."

Not looking too hopeful! If I'm lucky, they may get another batch from Sony in the States. However I suspect it will be a while to locate, and a further while to ship over and dispatch. So I'm not expecting anything from them for a few weeks.

I'm disappointed with Expansys, but not suprised. I've been using them for a good few years and time and again anything on special offer that finds its way on to bargain forums runs out of stock long before they update their online stock levels, and stop people placing orders.

Good luck to anyone who's still waiting on a delivery date!

Rufus.

Product not found or is not available in this region.

Looks like no more refurbished 505s for a while.

If it says "in stock" it should mean that they have the unit. Otherwise they should write that they will get it from a supplier. But I know that different sellers mean different things with "in stock" and you usually have to check ratings for the seller at sites like pricerunner to get what typ of seller they are. Expansys would get a lower rating if they do not mean that the have the item when they say "in stock" (or this is how the rating works for Swedish sellers at least).

Hello, new poster here... I normally just enjoy reading, but felt I ought to reply this time.

Expansys are a genuine and reputable company - I am also a long term customer of theirs (similar to an earlier poster). They are certainly not fly-by-nighters or shady in any way. However, I am also disappointed that I too missed out on the sony reader, despite ordering when there was supposed to be stock.

Having spoken to their customer service team, it was explained to me that (like many companies, including my own) they take sales through multiple channels - web, phone, fax, even in person...

The stock level shown on the site is updated periodically, but in between updates it reflects last known stock minus web sales. Ordinarily this is pretty accurate, but when a rush happens (as was generated by this site!) and some large orders come in by phone / fax, the website stock level gets out of sync and orders can be placed for which there is no stock.

It's a shame - and unfortunately, the girl on customer service couldn't guarantee that they would have stock - but it's understandable and does happen from time to time when exceptional circumstances arise.

I don't have any ties to Expansys - I just hate it when threads denigrate decent companies who do their best to fulfill customer expectations (btw. I determine level of decency of a company by how easy they make it for me to return an item - I usually think it's on the way back in that the true worth of a company is shown!).

Yes - they are only a few miles away from me, so I generally buy things from them in person.

All 3 units my friends and colleagues ordered arrived happily the next working day (2 on Thursday, one on Friday).

I spent Friday afternoon talking to one enthusiastic new owner.

On Friday evening one of our shift engineers arrived with his one (which had arrived that morning) and I set it on charge (I have a PSP charger on my desk for my zaurus and reader). Before telling him to download the firmware updater and giving him a quick runthrough of Calibre's features.

The other one hasn't been in touch since it arrived so I'm guessing he's happy.

I'm very sorry to hear others have had differing experiences with Expansys. But based on my experience and those who I pointed at this offer. I can recommend them whole-heartedly.

I know it is surprising in 2009, but many of the smaller online commerce web sites do not have a fully automated ordering system. The orders aren't fulfilled automatically. A person gets an email and has to put the other in some other system. Then, they probably have to go to some other system and update the inventory.

I know it sucks to not get your order in. But alot of people are seem to attribute stuff like this to malice when it is more often due to incompetence.

There's no reason these days that when an order is placed, that the database gets updated to reflect an order. So when the website goes to query this database, it will show the correct numbers most of the time. But if you happen to hit the website when there is stock and stock is no longer available by the time you go to place the order, the site can then tell you they are out. It is not a good idea these days to manual systems.

Take Best Buy for example. If you order something from them for in-store pickup and the site tells you the sotre you want to get it from has it in stock, yet when the staff go to actually find it, they don't have it, best Buy will ship the item to you with free shipping. This happened to us once with a window air conditioner. And Best Buy did make good on their free shipping.

I've ordered one too at 13/02/2009 10:15 am. My main status shows: "awaiting stock", and the description is: "We are currently awaiting the stock required to fulfil your order.".
And there are other info's in a box, the last one is: "order placed in uk sites". What does it mean? Will I ever get one? A made a call to them, they said that "maybe when I made my order there where many others before me..." That was not obvious to me. When I made my order there was 40-50 pieces in stock. So, what can I expect?
