Usually you should use the regular "start nickel" of the main menu. Use "start nickel no fmon.sh," when the regular "start nickel" does not work. For when you launch nickel with "start nickel no fmon.sh," you cannot exit back to KSM, you can then only power cycle the device to get back to KSM.
That "start nickel" stops working does happen when you sign out and again in of your Kobo account, when you do a factory reset without preserving your database, when Kobo does some changes that make it necessary to create new thumbnails of some books (as it happened by introducing the new home screen).

OK, so how can I make the Nickel start normally like good old days from KSM? I cannot live with "start nickle no fmon.sh"!

If you did what I recommended in post #671, and it did not help, I have no idea.

I have followed your instructions, but there is almost no way to get into the Nickle other than the "start nickel no fmon.sh" method. It takes more than 1 reboot for a workable "exit nickel" button. In either cases the icons are there, but most of the times not working at all. Even sometimes the Nickel boots up and shuts down immediately. So it is gone. I don't regret the lack of Nickel itself, as its capabilities are not satisfactory at all. The only reason I need it, is to get the Natural Light and read the books in Koreader.

At the risk of repeating myself ... Did you launch nickel by selecting "start nickel no fmon.sh" and open each KSM png so that its thumbnail appeared afterwards at the home screen. And if you have the KSM pngs in a collection, did this thumbnail of the collection appear at the home screen?

Yes, absolutely. I have done all these things but to no avail...

I thought you had done this already, cf. this post. Or are you now talking about your Aura HD?

There are two methods to reset Kobos: "factory reset", and "manual factory reset". I had to use the second method this time as the soft reset didn't work for me, since by using this method no trace of any previous database should be left. But it seems the KSM08 (+ A1 extra) has problem with the latest FW, because even now the access to Nickel is blocked, unless by means of "no fmon.sh" method. It was a fresh install (KSM, Nickel, Koreader) and all the latest versions.

I think if you also test the same versions altogether, you will get the same result.

I would love to test the same setup as you have, but since I do not own an Aura One, this is not possible. Would be interesting to hear from other Aura One owners.

Anyway I really don't care about the Nickel itself, as I have said earlier, I just need it for its NL, whose coding seems to be a great challenge for developers so far. I hope you can help me with getting the light somehow, although you recommended a power cycle, but believe me it's too time-consuming each time, as most of the times I read intermittently and have to put the eReader in the sleep mode.

Perhaps other A1 users are still on the older FW versions and have not yet tasted the bitter taste of the newest version.

On the Aura HD, I have not changed the old KSM and its ancient Koreader version, lest it should brick!

My KA1 runs KSM 8 2015.10.27 on the newest FW 4.4.9349 (6f700792a0, 17.05.17). Allthough I rarely use nickel, I have no problem at all starting nickel with "start nickel" from the KSM menu. Returning to KSM with "exit_nickel" also is no problem.

So strange, because mine is a fresh install! All of them! The problem is that I can now only access Nickel after starting Nickel through "..nofmon.sh". After booting through nofmon, I have to power it off, and the upon the next startup, the Nickel strangely opens and even the switchtoKoreader.png works fine. But it only happens every other time!
Can you detect any glitches or recommend a workaround?
