And for anyone who is interested...

Kobo have sent different firmware to different areas to fix specific problems. For example, 4.3.9084 has only gone to Rakuten. It is probably fixing a problem with Japanese or the Japanese version of the shop that the rest of the world won't see. I don't think anything will change until 4.4 comes out.

Well, I think I'll be rolling back to an older firmware for the first time in 4+years -- 34121.9 hours to finish "Assassin's Apprentice", apparently.

When I first 'upgraded' from 3.19.5761 (to 4.2.something) I had similar problems with the time remaining stat in KePubs, but it seems to have settled down and is now giving accurate estimates.

I think it might have been that books which I had already opened in the old firmware showed messed-up time remaining estimates in the new firmware, but ones that I first started reading in the new firmware are okay. Not 100% sure though.

Thank you for your reply, GeoffR -- I set the book, and two others I was reading, to unread and then opened them again, and this seemed to fix the issue, so I'll see if it comes back and then decide if I want to downgrade or not. I began reading two of these only after I upgraded to the current firmware version though, it was all pretty random to me. Also, I haven't had this issue on my H2O so far.

To be honest, I don't have any problems with the firmware anymore in my daily usage, except for the stats being completely off. So, I've disabled them. If Kobo would fix the stats, I'd be fairly happy with the KA1 again.

And the swiping! It has to be performed in a very specific way, still is unreliable and might send you in the opposite direction of the book.
And the way Kobo handles highlights across pages. Works quite ok on the H2O but is a mess on the Aura One.
I suspect they still haven't figured out the touchscreen driver completely and I really hope they will eventually.

I hope so It's still a pity that the KA1 has an uneven screen (the gap between the body and screen on the left is a bit wider than on the right). Dust often gets in there, and I have to take it out with a brush. I doubt this will be fixed with a software update, but maybe I can, at some point, find a cover that covers the bezels as well.

Just a general question about firmware, posting here as it's the latest.

I see people talking about downgrading versions so I'm a bit intrigued by why.
Is there a reason not to use the latest version, other than personal preference?
Do the newer versions add things which suck or is it just a matter of not wanting the Google analytics tracking you?

I'm using the first H20 device.

I just got my H2O and it is running 4.3.8966. I only have 1 book loaded and the reading stats are fine. However, I will be downgrading ASAP if there is no patch for this version, as I have the new home screen, which I can assure you, I detest.

I'm quite happy with this firmware version. I will keep my H2O on it indefinitely. The only issue I have is Calibre not seeing the SD card. But that's probably not due to anything in the firmware. (So I start in debug mode, and load my books to the SD card that way). The device reads and writes to the card just fine.

Note to self: stay on this one!
