OK, only about 25% think it is ugly with 140+ votes in. The people have spoken. Can we finally put this silly (as well as mostly irrelevant) discussion to bed?

I switched sides. The K1 was 100% fugly (to me). The K2 looks good. And sure, lump me in with the fashion-conscious amoung us, at least when it comes to devices.

I don't think it is about "fashion" it isn't like putting on an ugly shirt and looking stupid, but I think that today's consumer has a very high standard when it comes to industrial design. The Kindle 1 looked cheap and ugly. The Kindle 2 has gotten much closer to the mark, I am not a fan of the buttons personally, but I don't see any other way to include them without doubling the thickness of the Kindle 2 (which is hardly a solution.) Looks do matter and at least Amazon is headed in the right direction.

Well, they could have a clip-on keyboard (typical slide-out would add thickness), such as they used to make for Palm devices or as made for Xbox or Playstation controllers, but folks that use a keyboard all the time would probably be less pleased.

I love the keyboard. If something is mentioned in passing in a book and I want to know more about it. I just hit SEARCH, type in the term, phrase, name, whatever, click Go and can choose from more information about that item on my Kindle (if available), in the dictionary, on the Internet or on Wikipedia. It's really broadening my horizons.

I was so excited about the idea of the Kindle, but the original design seemed really unfortunate. Even though the cost of the device really boiled down to its components (e-ink and the original device's SD slot are expensive!), the novelty of the item plus the price of the item pushed it into a "boutique" shopping category for me. I wouldn't pay that much for something unless a) I desperately needed it despite how it looked, or b) it had a nice design that was a joy to use. Seeing as I can read a beautiful paper book any time I want, the former certainly didn't apply. But now that Kindle 2 is out, so are my reservations, and I'm so excited! In my mind, the Kindle 2 isn't about fashion, it's more about the concept of "zakka" -- how items you integrate into your daily life should be beautiful, because it brings you personal joy.

I think the Kindle 2 improves on the looks quite a bit. Now it looks very applish and modern.

I still think it's ugly-looking but it is better than K1...I think it's because I have never owned a white gadget, silver - yes but never white and I can't get over that, it looks too bright but I love the features it has. I think the new kindle looks much better than the older one (granted, I am looking only from pictures, I don't know anyone near me who has one!). It looks so honking huge though in the pictures I've seen?? Is it bigger, or do I just see it in comparison to small fingers??? |

I think its purrty looking. I prefer it over the K1, but I don't think the K1 looked that bad. I just prefer the K2 apple look myself.

I honestly do not think it is fugly. I am not sure about the button placements...again.... I think the aesthetics of the Sony PRS-700 are certainly better. I am ashamed to admit toonight was the first time I actually looked at a 700 model. I like the look. But, the looks new Kindle, and the old one too, are certainly not anything that would have prevented me buy either device. I will even add that the keyboard area on the Kindle 2 might be even more transparent than on the Kindle 1...and to me I never even notice the keyboard on the Kindle 1. |
