It wouldn't help. After all, remember that we are in the country who willingly made contaminated pnut butter to go in all sorts of yummy treats for kids. Again. Our quality control is getting a bad rep also.

I already know of one small family-run business that had to liquidate all of their inventory before the deadline, because they can't afford what it takes to ensure that their products are lead-free. At least they still have the eBook part of their business.

Despite their honorable intent, was common sense thrown out the window when they were drafting this piece of legislation?

Having spent 30 years in the printing industry I cannot say for certain that lead is not in inks but there are heavy metals used in the pigments. So we make sure that the lead is gone but what about the heavy metals left, is it then ok to let your child eat a book?

Don't forget we will have to ban all ebooks because if your child took apart the ebook and ate the inner workings there is lead and heavy metals there also.

Bookarexia/Bookalemia: a newly catagorized disease (eating disorder) for those who consume vast quantities of books... literally.

(I'm sure someone can come up with a better, technically accurate word or name for this than I.)

it's just amazing the human race has survived as long as it has. my god, when i think of the exposure to paper books i had in large quantities *every* *day* when i was a child !! that's probably why i didn't grow any taller, i'm sure. it's just a miracle i'm not dead.

Gee, when I was a kid, we didn't have all this protection and I turned out just fine. In fact, I think I'm better off for it. I think my immune system is stronger because of it. if all this nonsense is really bad for you, then I should be dead many times over.

Phew, thank the heavens I was warned! I just threw out all my books to ensure my future safety! Can already feel the possible biohazards leak out of my living-room. (I'm still stuck breathing though...)

I think "bookalemia" should be reserved for "reading something that makes you want to throw up". For example, the story that precipitated this thread.

Next thing you know, they'll say second-hand books are bad for our kids. I can't always afford new ones.

I'm glad I live in a country / community of countries that thinks of things like that beforehand.
Sure it's ridiculous to ban kids from a library. But for a country to realize NOW that maybe toys and such should be tested for hazardeous materials is kind of sad.

If you pay attention to what other countries are allowed to work with it's amazing the entire planet hasn't yet died of poisoning.
Care for a class of chinese milk-powder?

You're all making fun of this when it's actually something you should be concerned about.

Sorry for being a party-pooper.

Well some people still think that library books can harbour any number of moulds, bacteria and viruses:

I'm rather surprised that I managed both to reach adulthood and to grow taller than Zelda. She can't have read nore than I did.

What we're making fun of is the very thing that you agree is ridiculous.
