I loved my dad's K&E slide rule and challenged myself to figure out how to use it without reading the manual. I toyed with the idea of buying a ham radio and for about two decades I spent every night in bed scanning the shortwave dials listening to broadcasts in languages I don't speak before I nodded off to sleep. My favorite magazine subscription for the last twelve years or so has been Sky & Telescope from which I've learned a lot and I've toyed with buying my own telescope. I have written programs in my free time to, for example, statistically evaluate different sequences of plays in Bejeweled to maximize one's score. I have an ongoing project to digitize photographic images to reconstruct three dimensional arrays of such things as the branching and leaves on trees so as to map out and analyze the similarities and differences between species and individuals. Just for fun, mind you. I read for pleasure. I enjoy doing puzzles (crosswords, Jumble, sudoku, etc.) but I like to make them challenging by setting time limits and doing them without pencil and paper. I love walking over to my bookshelf and opening up a physics or other book and working problems at random. I hate fooling with gadgets for very long unless they give me something I want. I'm pretty sure I'm a nerd. |

I don't know what a slide rule is, and never have, even though it has incredibly-frequently come up in forum conversations (not just here) all around the place over the years. Sure, I could look it up, but I'm waiting for it to naturally reveal itself to me. Cheers, Marc |

I guess I'm a geek with nerd-ish tendencies! Owning 4 PC's all with hand selected components and having a 10" and 3" telescope I'm not 100% sure which one has the upper hand...

I would say both, but as I've got to choose I'm probably more of a geek. The comparison table was interesting - I know a lot of people who are one or the other (or both), and not just at mobileread! |

If a geek has some tech skills I have to vote geek as I am a robot builder and work as a software developer. Ho Hum Just checked the chart - I am 100% geek Last edited by Peverel; 07-04-2009 at 06:39 PM. Reason: Chart Checking |

I never really got the whole claim a pejorative label for oneself thing. Some would probably call me a geek while others would be assured I'm a nerd. Me on the other hand; I'm an avid reader, a gamer, a writer, an amateur astronomer, a philosopher, and probably a hundred other things at any given time.
