Did you really think a missing front light is a major problem? Just switch on a standard light? You cannot read normal books without a light as well?

That comparison doesn't hold up, because an eInk device is not a normal book, it is an electronic device. Most electronic devices utilized for reading now have a light system of some sort, while a normal book has never had (to my knowledge) a built-in reading light.

For individuals (and at this point in the development of eInk devices, I would now safely say for most people), an eInk device with a front light is mandatory for purchase.

Exactly. It's been talked about on many, many threads. Most people find it desirable, but a few (such as yourself), find it not to be mandatory at all.

For me too. I prefer something very near of a paper. I prefer to have nothing between the e-ink screen and me. I understand that some people prefer to have a front light.

That's only partial true. 13.3, and on some part also 9.3" inch devices, have no frontlight because it is difficult to get an even lighting. Bigger devices tend to not have a frontlight.

And should an e-ink device not substitute a paper book? The term 'e-ink' (electronic ink) doesn't suggest that it glows for itself. Ink normally doesn't glow, too.

Personally I don't think it's a bit deal without front light but it's always a good idea to read the specs before buying a device. Although inn general I am highly satisfied with my Onyx Boox Max.

Besides, I think there are many things that can be improved in Boox Max more prioritarilly that the front light....

Totally agree with you. Getting an even lighting isn't easy even for 6'' devices.

Sure it exists!
I have Onyx Boox Max with 1.8.1 version and all app updates applied.
Open note app, then create a new note. At the top right there is a 'Abc' icon.
Click on it: it should change. Now look at the bottom of the screen: there is a keyboard icon: click on it and you can enter text from keyboard!
