The point was all of it, including the first "warning" to people with newer Kindle's are all might be's. There has been no indication that any of them are going to happen or hints that it's even likely. As I said a lot of thing might happen including the crazy idea of Kobo dropping ePub. I'm well aware of the de-DRMability of kePub, but some people wouldn't like it if that was their only choice as evidence of the complaints when that was the only way to get ePub3's from Kobo.

I disagree. Amazon is clearly tightening its walled-garden. It has released a version of K2PC that only downloads KFX if one's device supports that format. As far as I know, and please correct me if I am wrong, eventually Amazon enforces users to use the latest version of K2PC. When that day comes, if you do not own a pre-PW2 device, you will not be able to de-DRM or convert your books.

Question: Is it still possible to use versions of K4PC prior to 1.17?

For now yes. But, 17.1 is not KFX compatible. So that 17.1 is safe for now.

Again, not true. PW2 and newer owners can still download a copy of the book from the website and de-DRM and convert that just like they've always been able to. The only change (when 1.19 becomes mandatory) would be for folks, like me, who use K4PC as their download tool. They'll need a Kindle device registered to their account, but it doesn't necessarily have to be an older one. Also, I have options to download to PC for my Fire HDX 8.9 and Fire 7 as well as my old eInk Kindles.

Users of 1.15 have posted that they're still okay, don't know about earlier than that.

1.15 was the last mandatory version. As long as it works, I don't update K4PC until I'm forced to.

I still have 1.15 on one of my W7 pcs, 1.17 on the others.

Thanks for the clarification. Let's hope 1.19 doesn't become mandatory soon, or that tools are developed to de-DRM and convert KFX before it happens.

I was referring to the possibility in the future, not the current status.

And what evidence is there that Amazon has even considered not letting people download for their devices to PC? As I said anything might happen, but you make it sound like as soon as K4PC 1.19 is mandatory then PW2 & newer folks can't download anymore. K4PC and downloading for USB transfer are completely separate things.

For regular users, KindleForPC-installer-1.14.43029.exe is the earliest version that still works, and can be grabbed via FileHippo. For those wanting the PC with Accessibility Plugin, as used by many screenreader users, the latest version is KindleForPC-Accessibility-installer-1.14.43034.exe. That can still be grabbed from Amazon itself from the Kindle for PC with accessibility plugin link. The accessibility version never updated past 1.14, though I'm sure that'll change once the 1.19 beta period officially ends as the NVDA screenreader and Amazon are now working together to make Kindle books more readable for the blind.

Yes, that will likely be the case if the KFX format and DRM is not cracked if K4PC 1.19 is made mandatory.

No. KFX format requires several files. Downloading 'for transfer via USB' always gives you a single azw/azw3 file, even if your device supports KFX.

No, it gives you an AZW or AZW3 (usually, somebooks are AZW4 or Topaz)

Thanks for that clarification. I assumed based on some posts that some are needing older kindles to make this work. I have both, old and new. So I don't have to worry about the older kindles going belly up if I then can use the Voyage or Oasis for the usb transfer option. That is once my version of K4PC won't work anymore and the smart generous folks haven't figure out a way yet by then to work around KFX.

My brain hurts.

But thankfully so many nice folks around here are so helpful and patient with the likes of me, and those like me. You know, clueless to many of this stuff.

I feel a bit less worried about it all at the moment.
