I was rocking the satchel/messenger bag/'man purse' before it was cool (yes, I know, it never became cool), because I never go anywhere without my tablet, e-reader and too-large phone. Since I got the nicely designed Timbuk2 messenger bag, the level of grief I receive has gone down. Is it because it is better designed, or because people have accepted my choices?

Some friends got me a quilted handbag for Christmas. It looks small, but I was delighted to find that it can hold: My phone, my iPod, my Fire HD 8, my Paperwhite, my wallet, my charger, my e-cig case AND my small notebook that I've started carrying with me. I actually started reading stuff I got in the sale. Small miracle, that. Sometimes I think the mass of my TBR has created a black hole because I often get books and then somehow forget to read them till years later. |

And some people resemble bags - not that there's anything wrong with that; and other people wear bags.

If it doesn't fit into a jeans pocket, I don't bother with it. Phone is in a side holster. I can watch birds, clouds, whatever and amuse myself. I have all the identifying apps on the phone. They were physical books before being turned into apps. |

I met a woman in a photography meetup once, and I thought to be the chivalrous man. "I'll hold your bag while you switch lenses." I thought my back broke. My gear weighted around 15 pounds (which is normal for a large DSLR kit), but that bag was heavier. She was carrying *that* in addition to her photography gear. When she was looking for something, the stuff in that bag never seemed to end. That bag must have had a black hole (or worm hole) in there to allow stashing stuff into other dimensions or something. I mostly carry these things: e-reader (previously: a book) audio-player (don't like drain my phone for entertainment) tablet (sometimes, if I expect a REALLY long wait and want internet) phone paper notebook lunch box (to work) ... and whatever else I might need. Sometimes I take my system camera with one lens if I expect something worthwhile to photograph, for example. No-one ever said anything strange or disparaging about it. I've become so used to carrying it that I always experience a moment of anxiety when I don't have it with me. The moment I step off of a train or bus, or leave somewhere and I don't have that bag, I always go: "Damn, forgot my bag," before I remember leaving it at home. | |
