Aura One
Before I return the Aura One. I'm trying to figure out how I can sync side loaded books using Calibre and Kobo Aura One reader. Is there no way I can save my place in pages and bookmarks to Calibre, then use Calibre to send it with my book marks and page to the iPad? I'm hoping to read the Aura reader at home and when I'm out on the go I can continue reading on the iPad. Theres has to be some way other then just remembering what page i'm on and manually turning to that page every time I use a different device.
Thanks. Last edited by jazthedj; 12-01-2016 at 05:23 PM. Reason: spelling errors |

My Kobo Utilities plugin has a way to fetch the reading status, including position, from the Kobo devices. It can later restore these positions. But, I have not heard of anything that does an equivalent function for any other device or reader app. And I'm not that surprised.
While it simple to say "transfer the reading position", it's not as easy as that. Each device/app could be using different methods to store the position (I know of at least three). And the method needs to be translated between formats. And then there is simply accessing the device/apps storage for the positions. As you mention an iPad, Apple seem to have gone out of their way to make this hard. |

I can add all my non Apple purchased books into iBooks and they sync perfectly with my iPad, iPhone. So the Kindle is the only reader that will sync across all devices? I was really wanting to use a eReader but not a 6" screen.

Automatically syncing books only works between like devices and apps. Books on a Kindle can be synced to other Kindles and to the Kindle apps. I've always assumed iBooks was the same, but, I don't use it. Books purchased from Kobo will sync between the Kobo devices and apps. This will sync the reading positions and annotations. But, sideloaded books are not synced. I think some of the non-shop/device attached reading apps can sync as well, but only to instances of the same app running on another device. To sync reading positions between dissimilar devices or apps means there has to be a way to extract the position from one device/app and send it to the new device/app. That includes converting the position from the format used by the two devices/apps. To the best of my knowledge, no device or app actually supports either the extract or send. And there is definitely no standard for it. So anyone who wants to do this, probably has to start from scratch. I have done this for the Kobo devices because that is what I use. It wouldn't be hard to do for Sony devices, but no-one is particularly interested as they are no longer on the market. Doing it for the calibre viewer shouldn't be hard, but I'm not considering that until v3 is released. Converting between these three for an epub, isn't that hard (I've done it manually, just haven't written the code). For other devices and apps, I don't know. I don't have access to them to test. As there are no apps/plugins to do it, I assume either there is not enough interest, the data cannot be accessed (pretty sure that is the case of Kindles) or it is to hard. |

Thanks! I'll stop driving myself crazy trying to find a way. I borrowed my co-workers kindle paper white and I can use the send to kindle app to upload my ebooks. That syncs with the kindle app on iOS, Kindle and the Desktop app. It's really a shame Kobo isn't interested in supporting non Kobo Purchases. I get it they want us to Buy from the Kobo store. But I have 181 ebooks I haven't read yet..... Really frustrating being a first time ereader buyer. The Aura One is really a nice reader compared to the Kindle. I guess I won't buy any ebooks from Kobo and just borrow from the library. Hopefully over drive will sync between iOS and Kobo.

Why not just have one device for reading? I get that you may not want to carry around both, but the Aura one weighs next to nothing and is a lot better for reading on than a tablet, at least for me

Next to nothing? Try to carry it around all the time in a bag and we talk again..

I see you have a Kobo Mini that is truly made for carrying around all the time and weighs next to nothing. I often carry my Kobo Mini quite often in a pocket ready for reading most any place and time. Wish it had a front light. I don't have or need a smart phone.

Thats exactly why I bought the Aura One to read at home. When I'm on the move I'm carrying the iPad & iPhone. I agree that the Aura One is nicer to read on, but when I'm on the go reading a chapter or few on the iPad is fine. Kobo made a great reader, just they crippled it death.

Depending on where you live, if ebooks in ePub format is not important, go for the Kindle. Me, I borrow lots of ebooks from my library and they are in ePub. Then again, you could convert ePub in Kindle format, Mobi, but that's another story. With Calibre, I can convert on the fly ePub to KePub. I don't know of any way to convert ePub to Mobi on the fly. I carry around my phone, of course. It would be nice to read a few pages on my phone and not always have to travel with my Kobo. All in all, I feel that my Kobo has more advantages than a Kindle. But that's for you to decide. Last edited by Gone; 12-02-2016 at 03:07 PM. |

Yes, it does. But, you have to connect your Kobo account to your Overdrive account. At the moment, the only way to do that is using an Aura ONE. And if you can borrow an Aura ONE, do the setup and give it back, books borrowed via Overdrive should appear on any Kobo device running firmware 4.0 or later.

Bookmarks and no page sync with OverDrive on iOS, when reading a borrowed books on the KOBO Aura One. Seriously! Am I the only one who would like to read a few pages from there phone while waiting in line to see Santa?!
