I'll let the readers of Romances determine whether it's crap or not. My opinion...well, let's just say that some opinions cannot be shared...

Haven't you ever been in love, Don? Nothing like a nice soppy romance when you're in the right mood for it!

Yes, I've been in love!

However, what you're describing reminds me (gasp!) of the stock photos on Harlequin romances: The heroine standing next to a horse! --- Soppy, wet kisses indeed!

Is this going to be the one where Harry Potter stands naked next to a horse?

If you want to read an funny - and surprising - saga of introducing a (male) mathematician to the romance genre, you might want to check out the series of posts on the SmartBitches blog from Doc Turtle!

Any suggestions for a good one for a guy to start with? After all, there's been plenty of "chick flicks" that I've watched and enjoyed, so if these are the literary equivalent, I might be missing out by never reading them.

Wow, that's a tough call. There are lots of books and sub-genres that fall under the "romance" umbrella.

Like action/adventure? How about some Suzanne Brockmann? I remember loving "Out of Control" and "Over the Edge" - but those came out in 2001 and 2002, so understand, it's been awhile.

Like a little mystery, a little science fiction, a little romance? How about J.D. Robb's books. To get the initial romance, though, you probably have to start with "Naked in Death" and read it and the next three books.

Like your science fiction with space opera flavor? No one does it better than Linnea Sinclair. Try "Finders Keepers" or "Games of Command" (be warned, GoC has cutesy telepathic cats). Or Susan Grant - try "Contact".

Regency England is a popular setting in romance. One of my absolute favorites was "To Rescue a Rogue" by Jo Beverley, but I am just not sure if it's something a man would enjoy. The hero battles with opium addiction and the heroine has to realize she can't just tease him out of it. Lots of angst. Might be annoying to the average guy.

I tried to think of something lighter and "fun" - more "chick flick" - but it's not my favorite sub-genre, so I was having trouble thinking of one that stands out for me. I don't tend to remember details between the various books, or the ones I do remember are more "chick lit" than "romance".

Good luck!
