So, in typical Kobo fashion, the email I got on Friday saying they would be shipping me out a new KA1 in the next 5-7 days *really* meant that they had already shipped one to me and it was making its way (sans tracking number) to me from Canada. Got notification from UPS this morning that I should be getting a package requiring a signature tomorrow! LOL It is so much more fun to be amused by Kobo than angry. |

Received a replacement last night... let me rephrase that. I came home to find an unexpected FedEx door tag telling me I could pick up my package after 7:00 PM, 45 mins across town, typical Kobo fashion. Anyhow, after arriving back home around 8:30, letting it charge up to 30% before I could set it up, sometime around 9:45... to my surprise, the screen on the replacement is almost flawless. Better than the dark gray blotch (green w/ natural light on) that took up about a square inch at the bottom of the screen on the first one. I'm happy now. I finally feel like I can start enjoying this reader. |

I got the "we have receive your information and you will be contacted shortly with further information" email on 9/17 and have heard nothing since then. I'll be up against the 30 day limit in a few days, and hopefully wont have to make a decision whether to return my KA1 or not before I get my hands on a replacement. I wish i could say I'm getting used to the blotchy green spots at the bottom of my screen, but I'm not. Which is a shame because I love the natural light tone, it really works for late night reading sessions! |

In comparison, I'm quite happy with this screen. Maybe us goats don't see rainbows.

I don't see the rainbows either. I thought the screen looked great. I hope my replacement looks that good. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I'm glad people think it looks good. This is what mine looks like. And I wasn't happy with it at first because for the price I was expecting perfection. I do see the rainbow in that pic. At the bottom. The color (to me) is not perfectly even. But this just goes to show *I* am the one that is being too picky and critical because others feel it's "perfect". So that actually makes me feel better about my own reader.

I think this just shows that there is no perfect lighted screen with these capacitive touch screen readers. If you can live with a little gradient, then you should be ok if you can get a 'good' screen, but if you are the type to notice any flaws, and if you want as near as perfection as possible, your best option is to stick with your PW3, Glo HD or Aura H2O. Edit, I should point out I have a Voyage and am happy to live with the slight gradient from top to bottom that I see in low light settings because the screen/text is so good apart from that. I wouldn't even give the Oasis a try.

In my experience you really have to qualify if you're talking a "perfect" screen with natural light setting set to ZERO versus WITH natural light turned up. From what I've seen the lighting is pretty close to perfect IF you leave natural light at zero. Things only get funky if you start turning natural light up. So if you're not buying it strictly for the natural light, you should still have a screen as good as an H2O (in my direct comparison). And yes I can see the rainbows in most of the complaint pictures posted on MR, so it's not that I don't see them. |

But when you turn natural light "on", that's when things begin to unravel. There aren't just gradients in the orange level, but also blotches of green and yellow that become super obvious especially when you set overall brightness to low levels. I think a higher percentage ofboth picky consumers as well as the I-can-live-with-this folks will be more likely to be sensitive to changes in both *hue* and *tone* than just tone.
