I've never heard the word pronounced any other way when it refers to a female pig. How is it pronounced in places other than the South?

Strictly speaking, a capitonym is a word which changes meaning when capitalised. Some also change pronunciation or stress, but most don't.

Eg:

Polish/polish: changes meaning and pronunciation.
August/august: changes meaning and stress.
March/march: only changes meaning.

Sorry Harry, you are correct as usual. I was not thinking and have been up since 2:00 A.M. and am very tired. You are correct that any female hog who has had at least one litter is a sow. I was just recalling my youth and all of my relatives raising hogs. My wife was very surprised the first time she visited one of my uncles and saw he had hogs right at his back yard.
