I can't order anything for a minimum of two weeks, anyway, since I'm waiting on a tax refund to come in before I can order. But the BeBook is looking like a very attractive alternative to me, since part of what I was looking for was a device that reads almost all formats natively so I'm not restricted to only one format. The ESlick was attractive both for the fact that you *can* convert almost anything to pdf with their software (sorry Derek, but you can, even if it's not the ideal solution), and the price. Since I wasn't aware of the BeBook at the time, you can see why the ESlick was looking like the most viable option.
You can probably gather from my use of the past tense that is no longer looking like the most viable option... lol.

I've been seeing the $279 price for some time... I don't have any clue as to when it might change, but it's been trending down...

Given that they said "early first quarter" and that the hardware design (and maybe a batch of hardware) is done, I would say February. It was well known that Bezos dictated the delay due to software (translation: firmware). That means they could have a crapload of hardware just sitting there waiting for the new firmware load, which takes no time at all to do. This batch could solve their backlog problems and get the new version out as well.

In fact, perhaps the new backlog that has developed could be in part due to diversion of screen inventory to production of the Kindle 2 or perhaps a total halt in Kindle 1 production, also due to a switch over to and (firmware caused) stockpiling of Kindle 2?

Sheer speculation but not totally implausible.

In my case, I would like to see it soon and buy a second one for the wife to share books.

I'll guess we'll see on Feb. 9th, but either way I seriously hope that the leaked images and info regarding the new Kindle are erroneous (I like the current version better than that thing).

Here's another link: cnet news

The CNet article seems to have a clue on availability:

Quote:
It's interesting to note that one of the readers of my earlier story posted that he just got an email from Amazon saying that the Kindle his girlfriend ordered for him during the holidays was due to ship on March 5. Of course, that's just one buyer, but it wouldn't shock me if Amazon shipped out the bulk of its orders for the Kindle around then.

But what would a new Kindle 2.0 have? I see a wish for an integrated light for the display mentioned here and in the other thread there were wishes for a larger screen and a wireless scheme that could be used outside of the U.S. But surely if Amazon was about to release a Kindle 2.0 there would be real rumors about what would be different from Kindle 1.0. No?
