The device will NOT be operating at full brightness; it will operate at the underlying system brightness level. Full brightness is 100%, but a user can set the system brightness level to anything between 0% to 100%.

@cedhax Yes that is more precise than my original reply. The device will be operating at the underlaying system brightness which will be higher than it really has to be because the app is artificially dimmed by other means.

@kguil — Hi, first let me say that I totally respect that you are the developer and it's your choice how brightness control works in your app.

At this point, I'm just trying to understand how the brightness works. In other apps (MapleRead and Hyphen), I am able to set the system brightness to the lowest setting, then use the app brightness control to go even lower. The system setting is already at its lowest. So how does that result in the underlying system brightness being higher than it has to be?

Again, I'm not trying to make trouble. I'm just trying to understand how this works. Thanks!

@odamizu No problem. In the setup you described (lowest device brightness) + app brightness, no extra power is used. Power is only wasted when app brightness is applied while the device brightness is not zero. This case (which occurs often) means that the reader could have achieved the same brightness using the device slider (and saving battery) not needing app brightness (losing any battery savings).

Marvin controls brightness 'physically' but also has an 'application' extra dimming option since the v1 days. There is a tutorial on this Settings > About > Tutorial

Strange...so where does the energy go if it is not being emitted as photons? Does the device got hotter instead?
