Interesting. We need to compare rootfs before and after factory reset menu, and also after DO_FACTORY_RESTORE, so see what is different in those three cases and how it affects the jailbreak.

I made another update to the top post directions just now.
I haven't (yet) added the "DO_FACTORY_RESTORE" to the preparation steps.
I would like to hear a few more success (or failure) stories.
I did directly reference (with credit) this sub-sequence of posts in the warning section (and the "GM warning" has been in the directions since 1:30am).

Confirmed! Had to flash initial firmware again after DO_FACTORY_RESTORE fix. at least the screen flashed and Kindle rebooted after applying ;installHtml. Then I applied the hotfix and now upgrading to 5.8.1.

Yes. Once you are on 5.6.1.1 on pw3 you won't need to do a DO_FACTORY_RESTORE if you"downgrade" to initial release from initial release.

That sounds exactly as if the double downgrade is replacing the 'wrong' u-image file that would otherwise be used.

Clarification please: are you saying to do two downgrades in a row and skip the last factory restore step? That does not make clear sense to me, so there must be some other hidden factor at work if what you say is correct as I understand it.

Not sure if I understood what knc1 asked, but what I had to do was:
I) from 5.8.1, downgraded to initial 5.6.1.1 fw.
II) bootloop happened. DO_FACTORY_RESTORE required.
III) now on 5.6.1.1 after factory restore, had to copy initial 5.6.1.1 fw again to Kindle and update it (even though it was already on 5.6.1.1).
Now it won't bootloop anymore and I could proceed to jb step (copy required tar.gz file and type ;installHtml)


Also, my notes weren't lost. Don't know where they were stored, or if it's synced, but they're there.

Yes, this would be the proper condensed form of the method I also used to get around my "bricking" PW3.

@eyoyoe: Gotcha. Can't remember when it ended up on the WiKi, and why I still forgot to add support to it, but I'll do that tonight.

@GM/@knc1: Duh, I'm terribly stupid. Yes, of course, a factory reset wipes /usr/local (cf. /etc/upstart/shutdown_special), which kills the factory JB vector. -_-".
