My pw3 got bricked too after following the new procedure. Right after downgrading (md5 checked) I get the message "please wait a moment while your Kindle starts up" . There's a new progress bar that is looping when get to the middle. Then after a 4 or 5 times doing this I get the Repair Needed error. I tried the DO_FACTORY_RESET tip (with no extension and placed the file alongside documents folder) but unsuccessfully. I still have access to its folders when I restart it and the progress bar is looping. Last edited by vitorm; 07-06-2016 at 08:16 PM. |

The name of the key file is: DO_FACTORY_RESTORE all caps, no extension, no contents |

Calling it factory reset in the menu but factory restore in the flag file is confusing. I wish the menu also set factory restore, so reset could still be the tradition computer reboot function (like the internal reset switch). Reset / restart / restore. Restore is more obvious in its intended meaning in light of other definitions of reset. |

I'm now stuck in step #5. I already placed the .tar.gz file alongside /documents folder and when I type ;installHtml and press return nothing happens. I see a search button that give access to search bar. Should there be a search bar direct in home screen? Should I setup/register my device once downgraded?

I have KPW3 US WiFi 5.8.1, did factory reset, skipped the setup process before downgrading, also got the "needs repairing" message and then fixed by DO_FACTORY_RESTORE.

@vitorm: On the home screen - Bring up the search bar using its icon - Enter: ;installHtml in the search bar and press the return (enter) key. Anything entered in the search bar that starts with a semi-colon is a system command. Last edited by pdurrant; 07-09-2016 at 05:57 AM. Reason: ;instalHtml -> ;installHtml |

Report form now linked into directions and trouble report thread created. We need all the help we can get since we can't duplicate this with our own devices.

It looks like "skipped factory reset" is the key in this case. That database format downgrade problem may apply here. Thankfully the restore flag file worked.

Yeah. I did that. But isn't Kindle supposed to flash screen a couple times then reboot?

If the JB worked, you can install the 'hotfix'. If the JB failed, you will not be able to install the 'hotfix' In either case, post back the result.

Just tried that and got an update error screen. Now rebooting. Should I try factory resetting again?

The (correct) DIY hung Kindle recovery steps are at the end of the new trouble report form.

Also give us the first six characters of the serial number shown. None of this sounds right.
