Coursera Removing Over 400 (FREE) Courses. Are You Prepared?

UPDATE: I'm reading things that seem to contradict one another. On one of Coursera's webpages, it indicates that 417 courses will no longer be available after June 30th. But on another one of Coursera's webpages, there is an update from them about this change. It states that "there are a few dozen courses on the old platform that will not migrate to the new platform" (emph. mine, G). That update is dated June 17, so I have to believe that the information contained within it supersedes the information on the first webpage that I referenced above. Now the question is: which courses are part of the "few dozen" that will not be available after June 30? I haven't found an answer to that, yet. One piece of good news: I read, on one of Coursera's webpages, that the procedure to save the courses is or can be a batch process. In other words, you can select the courses that you want to save, and do them all at the same time. You don't have to save each course individually. Sometimes I get the idea that I'm the only one on MobileRead who cares about this kind of thing, but here goes . . . . Coursera, a participant in the MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) initiative, is changing the platform that their free courses are delivered on, to a new platform. This is set to occur on June 30. That might not be bad news, in fact it might be good news, except for one thing. When they shut off their old platform, over 400 courses that are a part of what they call now the "old stack" will go the way of the passenger pigeon and dodo bird. That's right, they're going to disappear. This even includes courses that a person may have taken in the past. Here is a complete list of the courses that will be removed. But no worries. There is an organization called Class Central that is providing a free guide on how to save the course materials (videos, slides, transcripts, etc.) before they disappear on June 30. You can find a link to that guide, as well as to other information about this development on Class Central's website. I know that I've got to get busy now. Frankly, I have never downloaded any courses of MOOC that I know of (I've downloaded a few from iTunes University and other sites, though). But, I want to go through the list of courses that will disappear at Coursera and make sure that there aren't any that I would like to have. The passenger pigeon and dodo bird aren't coming back, and neither may any of those courses. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 06-18-2016 at 11:45 PM. |

Classical-music.com's new free download of the week is Alice Coote sings Schumann's 'Meine Rose'. It is a live performance by Alice Coonte and Christian Blackshaw. Here's more about it: The recording was BBC Music Magazine Choral and Song choice in April. 'Blackshaw's piano playing is the ever-shifting heartbeat behind the wonderfully supple expressive contours of Coote's voice, eloquently tracing those of Schumann's melody,' writes Hilary Finch. http://www.classical-music.com/free-...nns-meine-rose. |

I post this with trepidation. Why? Because I don't remember ever seeing a post on this thread of a newspaper, magazine, or journal subscription. But subscription media seem to fit in this thread's title, "Media Deals (non-eBook/non-audiobook)." So, check that. I went to the O.P., there seemed to be nothing there to prohibit it. Check. And what I'm posting most certainly qualifies as a "deal, freebie, or resource." Check. It is digital. Check. Here's the deal, then. It is for a free newspaper subscription. It is to The Harvard Gazette. It is "Harvard's official newspaper, and highlights faculty research, administrative staff, students, and events." Frankly, it is of no interest to me, what with me being an Oxford man, myself. The deal's at Google Play. There are many other subscriptions available, some at good or maybe even great prices. Annoyingly, news apps, subscriptions for one month, and such like are all mixed in together. Many times you have to click on each item to see how long the subscription is for, etc. But if you're a glutton for punishment, here's the link to the webpage with all of them. Alexander Street has announced/released their new classical music free download of the week. IMPORTANT: Before you do anything, let me give you a heads up. In addition to the 3 movements by Strauss that I'm going to mention in a moment, there is an opportunity to grab Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, Mvt.4: Finale: Andante maestoso - Allegro vivace free, also. If you are interested in this piece, I encourage you to download it first. Why? Well, you may remember that last week there was a Tchaikovsky movement offered (I am almost certain that it was a different one than the one offered this time), but it disappeared if you navigated away from the download page and came back. I couldn't find any way for peeps to get it back if that happened. That might be the case with this week's Tchaikovsky offering. The primary free offering this week features Duet-Concertino, "a work for clarinet and bassoon with string orchestra and harp, by Richard Strauss (1864–1949). This recording features the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana with Fabio di Casola (clarinet) and Daniele Galaverna (bassoon)." It consists of 3 movements: Allegro moderato, Andante, and Rondo: Allegro ma non troppo. Interestingly, the blurbs for this week's downloads never mention the Tchaikovsky piece, which leads me to believe that it, like last week's, is some kind of fluke, quirk, mistake, or such like. Here is the webpage to go to to download the movements. Remember: if you want the Tchaikovsky movement, you might want to download it first, because if you navigate from the download webpage and come back, it will almost certainly be gone for good. As usual the movements are available in either or both the MP3 and WM4 formats. Happy listening. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 06-23-2016 at 12:20 AM. |
