I checked this morning and my bank did charge me $21.67 for the Paperwhite. I removed special offers, so there was an additional charge of $21.67 for that.

It was reported on an internet shopping site that Amazon sent out 24,000 Paperwhite email cancellation notices. I don't know if that's correct, but it wouldn't surprise me and has to be right up there with crazy price errors.

I remember one holiday they had a Gold Box special on Paperwhites for I think $30 it may have been $20. It was nearly impossible to get one due to how much people were trying to order one at once.

Yeah, I remember that. Wasn't it like $19 dollars? I think it was a deal through a special offer? Or could have been gold box. All I know is that I could not even get the page to load before they were all gone. It was like seconds. Poof.

In Europe, a store is obliged to sell a product at the given price, if the given price is reasonable. I actually bought a Brother lettering machine for €89. I was wondering why this model was €10 cheaper than the model below it. A few days ago, on the same site, I saw that machine for €149. That made a lot more sense (also, when regarding the prices at other stores at the time).

The store couldn't have refused to sell me that machine at €89, as there were many other lettering machines listed, starting at €29, going up to €169 or so, so €89 would be seen by a court as a "very reasonable price".

A an e-reader with a frontlight and such at €20 through, when there are no other e-readers available at that price point (not even less sophisticated ones) in the Netherlands, would probably have been refused though, and you wouldn't have been able to fight that.

Dell, on the Dutch site, once shot themselves in the foot by offering a laptop with a 1TB SSD instead of a 1TB HDD... (at the time where SSD's were very expensive) and they had to honor it, because €999 would be a very reasonable price for that laptop otherwise.

That's certainly not true in the UK.

The price of goods, services or digital content is a key part of a contract (a legally binding agreement) between you and a trader. When a trader displays goods, services or digital content (in a store, online or in a brochure for example) they are inviting you to make an offer to buy, known as an 'invitation to treat'. This offer may include a price. If there is a dispute over a price and a contract has not yet been formed - perhaps a trader will not consider a price reduction or they make a mistake and the price on display is too low - they are legally entitled to decline your offer to buy. What this means is that you cannot insist a trader sells the goods, service or digital content at the advertised price.

There is an exception though:

This is the case if the price is a lot lower or higher than what can be considered reasonable. Then, you'd have a reason to doubt if the price is correct. ConsuWijzer is the government's website regarding consumer rights and obligations. This site clearly states that if the displayed price in a web store is 'reasonable', and 'offers no reason to doubt the correctness', an product has to be shipped for that price if an order is put in and completed (thus paid). If a price is clearly wrong (such as €99 for a 50 inch TV instead of €999), the seller doesn't need to deliver for that price.

AFAIK, this is even a European guideline, but I don't know if countries are obliged to follow it.

In the case of my lettering machine, I had a bit of a reason to doubt about the price: Why is thee 550PT €10 cheaper than the 350PT lettering machine? The 550PT is a bigger model.

It should have been priced at €149, but I couldn't know that at the time. At €89, it offered above-average features for it's price compared to other lettering machines, around the same price, so I ordered it.

However, it was not an unreasonably low price. It was not a price at which one would say: "It's impossible that a lettering machine costs just €89." €14.90 would have been a clear mistake though, and the store would have been able to refuse the sale.

Maybe this was also the reason it was so hard to get the device repaired, which was DOA (keyboard didn't work). The store went out of its way to get ME to send the DOA product to Brother, at my own cost, and wait weeks for it to be repaired. I actually ranted about that in the Vent and Rant thread. Maybe they tried to get me fed up with the issue so I'd return the device and they'd be able to refund the €89 and 'undo' the mistake (and lose a customer in the process).

They relented and got very polite regarding the warranty repair when I sent them a few links to ConsuWijzer, and told them that there *would* be a legal followup if they continued to disregard the Dutch law. (Which states, that the *seller* has to handle any warranty claims with a reasonable offer of repair or replacement; and having a customer ship back and forth a DOA device, on his own cost, and then wait 4 weeks for it to get repaired, is not reasonable.)

According to the exception you just posted being $119 item on sale for 85% could easily be a typo so no Amazon would not have to honor it.

In the Netherlands, it would indeed be seen as unreasonable to acquire a new KPW at €20 or so, when comparable readers cost €129, and even the cheapest reader available doesn't get near €20. The store would indeed refuse the sale.
