I received my Oasis today, black cover. I just wanted to say that I am extremely happy with the screen and with the cover. The cover is better than I expected from the comments. Quite a bit like the Voyage cover in texture. The screen is clear of color distortions and I have had a paperwhite with the color artifacts that I just couldn't stand. I don't see the cones either. Very nice surprise that it is so good. I also like the weight and ergonomics of the device. Very pleased.

Absolutely ! Always glad to hear good reports too. Now that more of you have your Oasis, how do you like the screen outside in the sun. Any glare at all ? |

I have been using the Oasis for about a week now. The screen on my unit is great, very similar to the Voyage. I read mostly at night so I have the brightness turned down quite a bit. I really like the ergonomics of the unit, the ability to modify the page turn button (if one hand gets tired I can use the other hand and still use the page turn buttons). Highlighting passages appears to be "better" - it's easier to select text. I read with the case on the unit and it's really light, battery life is fine after using it at least 30 minutes per day with wifi off. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

I received mine today. I love it! I can see faint bright spots along the edge of the screen where the LEDs are, but only when I look directly at them. When I'm reading I don't see them.

In the sun it appears more or less the same as other e-ink screens I've had before, only higher resolution. No glare, though if you actually try tor reflect the Sun off it into your eyes there is definitely more reflection than there was off the PW1's plastic (though both are utterly unreadable if you do anything like that, heck, even *paper* gets hard to read if you do that).

Runnning the battery down for the first time

I'm running the battery all the way down to see what happens, and y'know, I think there's some clever design here too, though it might be a cognitive illusion on my part. First, the stupidity. The Kindle goes completely ape when the charging cover runs out. You get warnings on every startup attached to the cover, warnings on every connection to the cover, and extra warnings when the level drops below about 5% (which thanks to battery-reading-level inaccuracy happened to me three times), then several more warnings before it hits 0%. I think they've forgotten this is only a charging cover, not the device itself! I wouldn't be surprised if these were quiesced significantly in a later release (at least I hope they are, they're well past sublime into ridiculous). But now I'm running it halfway through its last charge, *not* connected to the cover (because what's the point? it's empty), and, y'know, I think the Kindle knows its doom is nigh. I suspect it remembers the state of its cover even when not attached to it, because it's refreshing the screen more slowly, as if at near-freezing temperatures, occasionally dropping into sleep mode in only five minutes rather than ten, and going into deep sleep after perhaps half an hour: all very unusual, and all plausible power-saving measures. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find the indexer is suspended too, but of course there's no way to tell. But this might just be a cognitive illusion: *I* know the cover has run out... |

Would you guys buy an Oasis at $150? i.e., if I sell my Voyage, is it worth a $150 premium? It's really tearing me up. Also concerned about that backlight issue...

Do you want to buy or sell your Oasis? Are you trying to sell your Voyage to recoup half the cost of the Oasis? Oh and ereaders are front lit not backlit. Just a little heads up so if you read reviews that mention backlights, the reviewer may not have ever actually seen an ereader. (Obviously I am talking about so-called tech review bloggers. Not Amazon customers. ) | |
