"I haven't had an issue connecting it to Calibre, and getting it to recognize it, but I can't move books except through calibre companion. Calibre says they are there, and ES shows they are there, but they don't show up in kindle." I recently got a Fire and added a 64mg SD card. I intended to load the books on the card. The books loaded ok and I could see and open them from ES File I couldn't open from the home or book page. I contacted Amazon and was told that I couldn't read the books if they are on the SD card I could only read them on the main memory. I'm glad I didn't overspend on the card. Not much use if you can't load books to it and read them from the card |

I did view PDFs on my 1st generation Fire (same screen properties as the new Fire 7), but not the type of PDFs your son wants to use. I don't have it any more or I'd try posting a screen shot. D&D PDFs, from what I gather, are designed to print out on 8.5x11" paper, have tiny text and graphics, so may not be readable viewing full page on a 7" screen with only 162ppi pixel density. But if you're willing to zoom and pan a bit (or view partial page zoom-to-width in landscape orientation) it is probably workable. A dedicated PDF app like EZ-PDF or Adobe Reader will give you more options than reading them with the Kindle app. If it is an option, I would just get one and try it out.

I complained (up thread I think) that the (software) keyboard supplied with the Fire 7" didn't have a /paste/ function (as Ctrl V) unless you connected a Bluetooth keyboard. I now notice in the Amazon App Store the Swype Keyboard (app by Nuance Communications, Inc ) http://www.amazon.com/Nuance-Communi...dp/B00FHEP9XM/ which claims to be compatible and has that feature and claims DRAGON DICTATION too (There is a free version too). Has anyone tried this or any other smarter keyboard ? |

And it works on the Fire 7" (a 'Paste' button appears) so thanks again. Last edited by Little.Egret; 02-26-2016 at 03:37 PM.

Keep in mind that's the 7 HD which has a better screen than the current 7.

Finally used to it--and I love it!! I use Calibre Companion to connect to Calibre via content server. I wireless download books. If I just read before bed, I just turn off the screen, and when I turn it on the next night, it is in the same place. But, if I am going to another screen, you need to set a bookmark before you leave. That allows me to go back to where I left off. Not as intuitive as my PW, but I love the screen.

I've come over to the Dark Side and got one of these when they went on sale for $40. Now I don't really know what to do with it!

Yeah, but I'm feeling overwhelmed at the idea of searching through apps and figuring out what's worthwhile and what's not!

What do I like to do? Complain, mostly. I just need to look through some online manuals with tips and recommendations for apps and such like. And then start trying things out. I've seen a variety of recommendations for an epub reader, and I guess one of the first big tasks it to try them out, pick one, and then figure out how to transfer and organize all the epubs. I haven't used Calibre to organize my library, only for converting, so this is going to be a big job. |
