It was the "No Library found" that concerned me. However, I'm assured by Jamie from Sainsbury customer service that everything looks OK, and I should just be patient.

I do, of course, have copies of everything myself. But it would be nice to still have copies 'in the cloud'.

Make a dropbox account, upload your ebooks to said account. Presto, you have cloud storage. And likely better than relying on the company who sells you the ebooks, since even if they go belly up, or sell you to another company, you don't need to worry about the new company honoring the old purchases.

That's not quite what I meant by 'in the cloud'. Clearly I can provide internet access to my books for myself if I want, but that's not the issue.

If my purchases are still available through an online ebook store, it's quite possible that fixes to the books will also become available if publishers fix formatting and/or typographical errors. They also act as an easy proof of legitimate ownership.

Unlike Amazon, I don't think that B&N do update books. I've certainly never received an update from them, unlike Amazon, from whom I generally get at least one a week (of course, I've bought far more books from Amazon!).

B&N does get updated fixes to ebooks they sell, but they don't push those out OTA to customers who have purchased them.

You don't, unless you re-download the ebook. I only know BN gets revised editions because I purchased the Complete Malazan series from them as a single ebook. The version I got was... interesting. There were odd typos, punctuation, quotation marks, etc. in less than a uniform manner. This wasn't an isolated issue for BN, every retailer had the same one. I re-downloaded it quite some time later and the issues were, for the most part, resolved. The only lingering issue was between books quotes were either double " or single ' but within a book they were used consistently so I think it was just however the individual books were edited.

I'm not sure how Amazon or Kobo handles this sort of thing. But I can tell you contacting BN support is useless, unless they already have a corrected edition.

Same with Kobo. If you happen to know there is an updated version to fix typos and such you can get CS to push it to your account, but you have to know that there was an update.

With BN, I did not need CS to push the fixed version. I just sent the copy on my Nook account to the cloud, and redownloaded it. Thew freshly downloaded file was the fixed edition. I would hope Kobo would offer the same, though I haven't run into an issue with the editions of the books I've purchased through them as of yet.

Amazon handle it very well.

If it's a major update, they send you an email telling you that the update is available and asking you if you want it.

If it's a minor update, they don't notify you, but if you go to the "Manage Your Content and Devices" section of the Amazon website, and look through your list of books, you see "Update Available" alongside the book, and you can then send it to whatever device(s) you wish. I look through the list every few months and download all the updates (typically about a dozen every 3 months or so).

Is there any way to filter or sort by the "Update Available" criteria? I can't find one, but it would certainly be useful.

There used to be a "Books with Available Updates" option on the sorting dropdown, but for some reason it was removed a while ago.

It is a bit more complicated than that. There is a third case where you have no access to the updated book unless you have it pushed to your account manually by Customer Service. This is the most common case for books I have purchased from Amazon.
