Besides the first kindle, I've never ever read mine naked. Once I bought a cover (for protection), I keep it on the kindle and read it that way. Until this weekend. Now that I've seen the ads for the Oasis, my hands started hurting, and I was compelled to take my Voyage out of the cover (which was durned difficult to do, till I found how to do it). So ... I will read my Oasis without the cover while at home, and dock it at night to recharge it. But, it will normally live in my purse, so that it goes with me. If I'm stuck in traffic (like, say some HUGE 2 hour snarl up), I have to have my kindle with me. In the car, I would probably take it out of the case. But reading on a bus, or in a grocery store checkout lane, I would certainly leave it in the cover while reading. For its protection. Not that it provides the corner protection that I worry about .... So actually, I've been wondering if I can put it in an old heavy tooled-leather Oberon case I have. It's not actually a kindle case -- it's a journal case. It has 2" deep pockets to hold a hardback journal. (And it was cheaper than a case designed for a specific kindle.) The thin edge of the kindle would fit into that pocket, and the heavy leather would provide pretty good drop protection, I think. Possibly more than the provided case, since it would be bigger all round (over large edges). We'll see. |

Won't be getting an Oasis because I just got the Voyage less than 2 months ago!

The advertising includes the battery in the cover in that timeframe (at the reveal, it was 2 weeks w/o cover, 9 weeks with). The "20 months" bit was because of the newer hibernation setup they have going on.

I'm hoping if I wait six months to a year Amazon will sell a naked Oasis, or there will be enough people needing a new cover and that I can eBay it. (It's not so much the money as the principle. I don't want to pay for something I won't ever use. Okay, maybe it's the money.)

My phone has a 5.5 inch screen. Since, like most men, I don't carry a purse when I need to read while out, dr's office etc, I read on my phone. I will probably read without the case and store it in the case. When the battery is under half on my Oasis I let it charge while I do other things. Could easily do it overnight next to my bed.

I will probably also get a pouch to put it in and then store it inside of my purse when away from home. Then use the cover to recharge at home. I will have to try it first. Mine should come by Monday so I will see then which way I like it better . I do normally read one handed though so I expect without the cover will be my favorite.

Also, when you're out, it seems like the protective function of the cover would be more useful: its principal non-charging purpose is screen protection but it seems likely that it would also protect from accidental spills, putting the thing down on a wet surface, etc etc, all things that happen more often when out than when anywhere at home bar the kitchen -- and if you're keeping your recipes on an Oasis you are richer or more foolhardy than me.

If they say 6-7h that means I'll get 4-5h because I use font a few sizes larger than what they probably use for their usage testing. That is worse than my tablet and won't even get me through the day. With the cover on, it'll be thicker and heavier than the paper white, so I won't use it that way. Which means I'll have to mind the battery. That isn't good. Last edited by Barty; 04-29-2016 at 09:56 AM.

Well, my thought was to read mostly without the cover, but I'm finding the cover isn't nearly as bad as it sounds from the weight. It is a bit smaller, but thicker than the Voyage (barely). Combined with the better grip makes it less of a lever in my hand than I expected. So I'd happily take it in the cover out of the house or on long trips. And I find I am reading it about half and half with and without the cover on while reading. Without the cover, though, it is ridiculously light and comfortable. |

You could read without the cover most of the day, then when the battery gets low put it back in the cover. Or use the cover occasionally during the day .
