Can I add a password for KUAL?
I'd really like to know if there's any way to protect KUAL via a password, rather than locking the entire Kindle

No, and I can't see why you'd want one.
If you can get into the userstore because the whole thing isn't password-protected, you have an endless number of ways to circumvent any password that could be implemented in KUAL itself. security though obscurity != security |

I'd see a gain in having password for KUAL, it would certainly protect my kindle while left on an office desk from getting bricked by a random office lady checking out font options in Kual :-) (or from the neighbor kid holding it for 5 minutes & doing random things)

You should always expect the least probable thing. My father managed to trigger entry to diagnostics mode (Kindle has Coward's rescue pack installed) in first 5 days of using it. While I in 6 years of owning Kindles have never had Kindle discharge completely, so I didn't even consider warning him about that, to not try to power it on while it charging.
Fortunately he didn't try pressing any of the menu options in diagnostics ![]() ![]() After that I've made sure to show him how KUAL looks and how to exit from it and warned him not to press any off the KUAL buttons. I've also changed the Home view filter from "All items" to "Books" ![]() ![]() |

Besides, I don't think any of the default font settings exposed by the KUAL controls are capable of bricking your device -- you need to apply custom configurations for that to be a risk. Quote:

the KUAL menu system is a single active content document.
Kindles only look in /documents for things to display. I.E: Just move the KUAL document somewhere else (or delete it). |
