Bulfinch's Mythology: All Volumes by Thomas Bulfinch comprised of The Age of Fable, The Age of Chivalry, and Legends of Charlemagne. Relying on writers like Ovid and Virgil, Bulfinch's motive was to make mythology more popular. In that, he succeeded, as his works are still popular. Trooper to the Southern Cross by Angela Mackail Thirkell Major Bowen is a fine upstanding Australian officer. He has survived the First World War-Egypt, Gallipoli, France-and found a `dinkum Pommie missis' in London. After the Armistice he and Celia set out for God's Own Country. Much to his delight (and her chagrin), they are sailing on the Rudolstadt, a troop ship, filled with his officer chums and their families. Only the journey to Australia is a long one, made all the longer by the lack of booze on board, and the 800 riotous diggers and a gang of prisoners on the lower decks. Trooper to the Southern Cross, first published under a male pseudonym (Leslie Parker) in 1934, is based on Angela Thirkell's own experiences of travelling to Australia aboard a troop ship with her second husband. Quite different from her other novels, it is an affectionate satire on the manners and mores of Australia, and an intimate portrait of post-war male camaraderie. Angela Thirkell (1890-1961) wrote many works of fiction and non-fiction, including twenty-nine 'Barsetshire' novels, which won her great popularity and acclaim. The first of these, High Rising, was published in 1933. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01C8OGS1U/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01C8OGS1U/ https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01C8OGS1U/ https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B01C8OGS1U/ |

This Highly Rated "Comic Noir" is $4.99 at Amazon, but FREE as a Pdf at NoiseTrade!

Our friends at NoiseTrade are offering the novel Warren Lane, by Andrew Diamond, as a free pdf. The Kindle mobi counterpart, at Amazon, is $4.99, and that is the lowest price there for any format of this book. Here's the book description, from the NoiseTrade website: In this non-traditional comic noir, Susan Moore attempts to hire the ruthless private detective Warren Lane to investigate her philandering husband, Will. Instead, she winds up hiring Mark Ready: a young, handsome drunk with too much time on his hands. With nothing else going on in his life, Ready decides to play detective. He assumes Lane's identity and proceeds to make a mess of things. Meanwhile, the real Warren Lane is investigating Will Moore for other reasons. Will begins to lose his cool as the investigations of the two Warren Lanes uncover the mess of money, crime, sex, and lies his life has become. A fast-paced page-turner that is alternately funny and moving, what sets this book apart from traditional noir and detective novels is its focus on character as well as plot, and its compelling and sympathetic portrayal of two strong, intelligent women in crisis. Just one question. Isn't "comic noir" an oxymoron? But I digress . . . . The book has high ratings, scoring an average at Amazon of 4.2 (38). At GoodReads, it's even better, a 4.41 (29). Although the pdf ebook is free, NoiseTrade does encourage people who download an offering of theirs each time to leave a tip. That seems to cover everything, except for giving you the link to the NoiseTrade webpage where you can download the ebook. |
