I didn't say that I don't care; I said that I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I would be (very) mildly irritated. I already have an ebook library sufficient to vastly out-last any reasonable expectation of my projected lifetime.

Honestly I forgot that option existed. I think I used it once when I got my original Kindle and I've never used it from de-drm purposes. I'll try it, since even wine 1.9.6 is playing hard-to-get with the K4PC installer. |

I also have an ebook library sufficient to outlast my lifetime, but would be extremely upset to buy a book I couldn't read. So I take steps to be sure that won't happen.

But it wouldn't be a book that I couldn't read. I have sufficient devices to allow me to read books in any commonly-encountered format: Apple, Android and Amazon devices.

Alternatively, you will either invest in fixing little problems as they come along, or big problems once every few years on a dist-upgrade. I also think it is incredibly annoying to try to build software on Ubuntu, due to complicated arrangements for development headers, etc. -- plus the build system seems very confusing. And here you are, trying to circumvent Ubuntu's aging software sources by building it yourself. Last edited by eschwartz; 03-21-2016 at 11:27 AM.

You would have to read it using the Bluefire app only on your Android devices as far as I know. I don't like how that app displays at all. And Amazon wouldn't do something so stupid as give you a book with new drm that it's devices can't use. I don't know anything about Apple to know if you could read a book with new drm.

I think I'll demur on further discussion of the merits of various Linux distros as: a) it's getting less and less relevant to this thread b) it's increasingly niche c) it probably deserves to be in P&R Thanks to shalym for the download-to-USB suggestion - that worked. 1.6.2 was the stable version into 2014. I noticed that you're on 1.9.6, but 1.8 has only been considered stable for a couple of months. I don't suppose it surprises you to know that my philosophy is opposite yours. I don't upgrade until I need to, mainly because I hate having to figure out how to disable all of the new features that were added since the last time. I'm pretty much the opposite of "early adopter." |

And irrelevant, since you are apparently okay with using the USB download option. (I will just make one quick mention -- winetricks references a bug that affects K4PC and warns "You may need to run with taskset -c 0 to avoid a libX11 crash". Might help you, might not -- you already have a solution, so... )

Thanks I'll keep that in mind. I do intend to try to resolve the wine/K4PC issue but it's less urgent as there's another way to do it.

For example, Kobo e-ink readers have been able to read ebooks with the new DRM since firmware version 3.5.0, which was released in July 2014.
