fw5.7.3 can i Jailbreak?
Hi I have a Paper white 2 (6th Generation) with 5.7.3 firmware can this be jailbroken easy.

No.

There is only a software Jailbreak for 5.6.5 nothing higher and unlikely there will be anything for a while/at all.

Not sure of the serial jailbreaks limitations.

No. As far as I know, hardware access is required (i.e. soldering on the connections fro a serial port) for firmware > 5.6.5

A serial port connection gives the person access to the "Recovery Menu" -

The Recovery Menu does not check update firmware packages for "Downgrade Attack" (Lab126's phrase for it).

(At least we haven't had any reports to the contrary.)

Logically, it can't -
It is intended to recover in situations where there might not be information available about the most recently installed firmware version.

Actually, it does (I have an old IDA screenshot posted somewhere of the relevant code). It's just that (current) *factory* recovery packages do not include version information .

I was guessing.

People have contacted me on how to downgrade using the recovery menu -
And from their silence - assumed it had worked for them.
Maybe it destroyed their Kindle and they just never wrote back.

IT did work on the erased Kindle which was restored using Fastboot.
That was not a factory recovery package but just the regular, Amazon posted update package.

So it may check, but being unable to check must not be a fatal error.

In another case -
The update package was signed but the signature was found to be 128 bytes long instead of 256 bytes -
Again, only a nasty log message, but not a fatal error to the load process.

I think that could be leveraged.

Of course, it would probably take a --create-corrupted option to KindleTool.

Somehow that doesn't feel right, after all the work and effort to make KindleTool do things bitwise correct -
to next give it an option that only copies the first half of the signature to the package . . . .

Plus - people would use that new option in strange ways.

Is there a way to downgrade from 5.7.3 to 5.6.5 to allow jailbreak then?
