I'm buying almost exclusively from Kobo at this point. And reading exclusively with Mantano. The conversion from Kindle to epub is certainly simple enough for me, but as time goes on, I find myself less and less interested in diddling my purchases before reading them.

And since they (Kobo) seemed to have stopped automatically making all EPUB3s into unADE-able kepubs, I haven't run into a kepub-only book for a long time. Which means I have very little need for a desktop application in my purchase/read/archive workflow.

I don't see Kindle as the last man standing in electronic ink devices as being even the most remote possibility.

I couldn't as I don't own a Kindle eink device. I'm starting to feel a bit twitchy again about DRM developments. I really hope Amazon isn't going to decide they don't want me to buy ebooks from them anymore.

Pick up a used Kindle Keyboard, here's one available right now for just $18.75 and download your purchases via USB for the Kindle Keyboard. Then copy the downloaded file to Calibre. It's really not a lot of work at all.

Ah, thanks! They were indeed in that format. I didn't realize calibre didn't do KFX. Like I said, though, downloading the books from Amazon straight to my pc is a workaround for that.

Thanks for trying to help, but no, if it ever does come to Decision Time I won't reward Amazon for poor behaviour (from my standpoint). On principle I'd buy elsewhere ... that's if there still is an 'elsewhere' by then, of course

As someone else already said today, thank goodness for that huge TBR stash I already have.

Yes, that gets you the book in KF8 format, which Calibre can handle.

Same here. My kindle Touch had a fatal accident a few weeks ago, and I worry that the way things are developing it is a matter of time before we have to have Kindle eInk devices if we want to read on anything other than computers and phones/devices that have the Kindle app.

The Kindle app for Android gets worse with every update, by the way. It's embarrassing.

Not sure if this helps or not, the Mac App Store in Canada has K4Mac 1.12 and the Amazon.com website still seems to distribute K4Mac 1.13. In fact I had to do a special search to even find a link to K4Mac 1.15 on the Amazon website.

I don't think your kindle needs to work to be able to use the download for sideload option. Just don't deregister it.
