from some of my wife's students ....

3x - x = 3
x^3 - x = x^2;

some of them don't even know fractions ........ at 15 years of age ....

mind you I've known at least one english language graduate who couldn't file in alphabetical order ....

Actually, now that you mention it, the only times I am good at math is when it involves money.


Although one time I had a fabulous pedicure that involved an hour and a half of massage chairs, hot stones, several oil wraps, etc. When I was finished I was so woozy I gave a $20 tip on a $45 bill. I thought it was 20%.

Totally friggin worth it though.

The error is entirely mine, I typed the question too literally and should have refrained from writing it mathematically.

3x take away x is indeed 2x; however the student in their wisdom came up with the answer 3......!

Think of it this way - write 3x in pencil. Take away the x with an eraser. You're left with 3

I figured out what you meant in the first post... but my first thought was to interpret it mathematically, as I did. THEN I saw what you were trying to say.

So are you still confused about my age, or are we just funnin'? Not that I care whether anyone knows how old I am or not. I don't care (and often can't remember) how old I am, so why should anyone else worry about it? As long as I get my dessert of choice once a year (mmmm... Lindsor torte....) I'm happy.
