There's a letter to the reader in each one that says she didn't. The headlines/article snippets in Isn't It Romantic? are formatted a bit differently, but that's the only major change I saw (I haven't reread them yet).

This thing really confuses me. Isn't Carina part of Harlequin? So one has to have another site to sign up? They don't work together so the promo things from the reward site don't work for buying and redeeming?

This is why I stick mostly with kindle books. I don't have to figure stuff out and its all there in one place, one click. Why so complicated.

Carina is part of Harlequin. Carina sells DRM-Free while Harlequin is all about the DRM. This has so far helped keep the stores separate.

Interesting. So technically I could get carina titles and still end up reading them on my kindles using carina site coupons. But I can't use the harlequin reward points on carina books.

I dream of a world in the not so distant future where I can buy books anywhere and just read them on whatever I want, whenever I want. Not having to do complicated workarounds, not having to feel like I am trying to do something wrong. If I can even figure out half the time what I am suppose to do. I guess I just want to read and not have to spend all this time fiddling.

eta: Sigh, even more confused. Made an account with Carina and in the account is tells me this:

In order to read the eBooks available at this site, you must have appropriate software (such as Adobe Digital Editions) installed.

No. They're just giving an example of an ePub reader. A book doesn't have to have DRM to be opened with ADE.


From the Carina site FAQ...

Is there DRM? What does that mean to me as a consumer?
Carina files do not have DRM (Digital Rights Management). This means consumers can purchase one format to use on multiple devices without worry of limited usage.

What formats can I buy? What if I want different formats?
Currently Carina Press offers ePub formats for use on all devices.

Alternately, if you prefer your book to be in another format, you may consider purchasing the ePub format and using free software Calibre to convert your file into further formats via their simple process.

I don't have ADE on my computer so can the books just be downloaded without using that? I only know how to "authorize" like an app on a tablet to use with drm. Not even sure if that is the same adobe than the ADE.
Can I just download the books to my computer and then to calibre from there directly is what I am asking.

Thanks for being so patient with me. This ebook stuff just drives me nuts and I find it so complicated whenever I step outside of using kindle books.

When you click the download link you'll get a plain old ePub which can be opened with any ePub reader, including the one built into Calibre. You don't need to come within 1,000 feet of ADE for anything regarding Carina Press. The ePub's will easily convert to AZW3 or Mobi/AZW in Calibre (or with Kindle Previewer/Gen) depending on your preference.



FYI: If you do need ADE at some point in the future (for Harlequin, Google, Kobo, etc) you would authorize it to the same ID (email & password) as you have your tablet authorized. At a DRM'd book seller you'd get an acsm file which you download to your computer and open with ADE which will then download the DRM'd book based on the ID you have things registered to.

Thank you so much, that was really helpful. Non drm epubs I can download I can get into calibre just fine. I did that back when we still had Discoveranewlove as the epub file converted for some reason looked better than getting the mobi.

I must have had Adobe on my computer at some point to create the sign in for it. Its been years though and I don't remember when or how and I have had 2 hard drives in between.

Ah, that is what that acsm file is. I saw that when I got that pocketbook reader as per Blossom and got the free harlequin books on it that have drm. I had to authorize the reader app and then just download the book. Which showed as acsm.

I suppose I might just be specially dense, but surely I can't be the only reader that has issues with all this stuff. I wonder often how many readers and buyers these sites lose out of because its just too complicated to deal with all this stuff.
